After graduating from the University of San Simon Medical School in Bolivia Alex became the assistant to the Professor of Physical Diagnosis. In 1965 his pursuit of further medical training led him to travel to Boston, Massachusetts where he interned at Carney Hospital. He later became a teaching fellow in Clinical Hematology at the University of Utah Medical School and then an instructor in Community Medicine at Tufts Medical School. Alex also proudly co-published, “A Variant Factor IX Deficiency in Female with 45x Turner’s Syndrome”, Blood and “Small-Cell Lung Carcinoma: An Analysis of 194 Consecutive Patients”. Alex’s main ambition was practicing Oncology, Hematology and Internal Medicine in Port Charlotte for over 20 years before retiring in 1997. He was the medical director of the Fred Farris Cancer Unit as well as the president of the Medical Staff at St. Joseph Hospital (Peace River). Alex was a firm believer in education and founded the Fred Farris (a patient and former editor of the Charlotte Sun) essay writing scholarship for high school seniors in collaboration with Bon Secours-St Joseph (Peace River) and the Sun-Herald Newspaper. In recognition of this work he later received the Education Award from the Charlotte County Chamber of Commerce. He also established a nursing scholarship in his name at Edison State College. Even his interests as a youth in Chile aided him in pursuing many activities during his retirement years. At merely twelve years of age Alex began working at a radio station and later advanced to the position of the main announcer of a radio station in Chile. During this time in his life, he developed interests in translating and reading poetry. These interests continued in recent years as Alex forged his creation of translating, reading and publishing the poems of Pablo Neruda to CD. He also translated and published poems of Gabriel Mistrial which were donated to the schools of Chile. Everyone who knew Alex knew of his love of learning and sports. He never missed a boxing or soccer match, or a chance to use his sharp skills at playing pool. Even recently, Alex began to undertake the new adventure of piano lessons. For anyone who knew Alex, all would have to agree that one of his most endearing qualities was his sense of humor and “wind-up, contagious laugh especially while delivering the punch line. His laugh will always bring joy to our memories.
Alex is survived by his wife Linda, daughters Dr. Julia Pizarro (Dr. Michael Sardzinski), Sarah (Dr. Tim Daniel) Daniel, Sylvia (Rob) Kona, Claudia (Wes) Hales, Roxanna (Randy) Anderson, Belinda (Adam) Campbell, a sister, Edith Pizarro and brother, Emiliano Pizarro. Grandchildren: Emily and Katie Sardzinski; Zachary, Alejandra, Cricket and Jarrett Daniel; Sophie Kona, Nicholas, Danielle and Josh Hales and Ariella Pizarro and a very close nephew in Chile Dr. Patricio (Veronica) Gonzalez. He is preceded in death by his parents Julia and Manuel Pizarro and a brother Julio.
Visitation will be held 4:00 PM-8:00 PM, Friday July 6, 2012, at Roberson Funeral Home Port Charlotte Chapel with a Catholic Wake Service at 7:00 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00AM, Saturday July 7, 2012, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Port Charlotte. Entombment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Port Charlotte. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Charles Borromeo Education Fund, Tidewell Hospice or the American Cancer Society.

Although I only met Dr. Pizarro through the creation of the Phantoms of the Orchestra, I was impressed by his concern and support of Charlotte Symphony Orchestra. Linda and Alex were at the first meeting forming the group and their involvement shows the kind of people they are. We need more "special" people like Alex and Linda in this world. Dr. and Mrs. Pizarro enhanced the curriculum for Charlotte Country Public Schools because of their interest in excellent writing skills, as well as educational opportunities for seniors who entered the Fred Farris Writing Competition. I experienced the joy of working with Linda and Dr. Pizarro inasmuch as this project had been one of our responsibilities in the Division of Learning for the district. The Pizarros gave much joy to the winners: a cash prize for college, a dinner, and a book containing copies of all of the entries for each winner. May God joyfully welcome the soul of Dr. Pizarro.

I had the great honor and privilege of working for "Dr. P" at Inter-Medic, and later at 21st Century Oncology, where he was a "babysitter" Doctor, covering while staff physicians were out of the office. He was the most dedicated, compassionate, caring physician that I have ever known. He always had a joke to tell, and he had the most infectious laugh. Even when we had a bit of trouble understanding the joke, we would laugh just because HE was laughing so hard. No one ever went hungry. His favorite was the "wonder roast" chicken sandwich, and he would buy lunch for many on our floor. Most importantly, his patients adored him, and they knew that his compassion was genuine. He would spend hours with some of them, as well as their families, explainig treatment plans and options. One of my favorite memories would be of his office, which, most of the time, you could barely get into. There were always stacks of charts on the floor, piled as high as his desk, waiting for dictation to be completed. But his time was better spent with his patients, because they were most important to him. My heart goes out to Linda and his family on the loss of this wonderful man. Know that he is being loved as much in Heaven as he was here on earth. He has joined all of the patients who have gone before him, and whose lives were better for knowing him. R.I.P. Dr P...until we meet again.

My life has been changed forever by Dr. Pizarro. I was blessed to have him as a mentor. He is responsible for me completing my nursing degree. I have known him since I was a young girl and my mother worked for him at Inter-Medic. I had such a love and passion for medicine. He was able to see the passion that we shared. In 1987 he was in search of an office nurse for his practice. He offered me the position. I had three small daughters at the time and was not really searching for full-time employment. So he convinced me to take the job temporary and on a part-time basis. Just until he could find a permanent nurse. So I agreed. We worked side by side for six years. I went back to college and completed my degree. It was with his encouragement and reinforcement that I was able to finish.
One of my fondest, and funniest, memories of Dr. Pizarro that I want to share is that he could fall asleep in any position during his long hours of work. He once told me a story about falling asleep while riding his cousin on his bike in Chile. He worked and studies such long hours that he would grab a cat nap sometimes in the middle of his sentences. He would go to his office late at night to study a patient's case that was troubling him. I knew the next day because I would be talking to him ( with my back turned) and he would start snoring. I learned that this doctor that I worked for was always studying patient cases. He was one of the finest diagnosticians in the field of medicine that I have ever known. I will miss him and all the phone consultations that we have had over the years, since his retirement. But I will never forget him. He has set the standards of practicing medicine high. God Bless his wife and his family that he was so very close to and proud of.

When I came to Inter-Medic in 1987 I met Alex and he was so happy that I joined the group that he turned over all his nursing home patients to me as well as his ER back up calls.He told me that now he could concentrate better on his beloved Hematology/Oncology.I received a lot of good tips from him regarding the practice of medicine (not in the books).We also enjoyed common music interests in particular our mutual liking of the Chilean Latin crooner and idol Lucho Gatica(a Dentist by profession),I still cherish some of his music that he recorded on a cassette for me and the beating he gave in a game of pool one time(boy,he was good).May he rest in GOD's Peace.He will always hold a place in my heart.

Although I only met Dr. Pizarro through the creation of the Phantoms of the Orchestra, I was impressed by his concern and support of Charlotte Symphony Orchestra. Linda and Alex were at the first meeting forming the group and their involvement shows the kind of people they are. We need more "special" people like Alex and Linda in this world. I experienced the joy of working with Linda and Dr. Pizarro inasmuch as this project had been one of our responsibilities in the Division of Learning for the district. The Pizarros gave much joy to the winners: a cash prize for college, a dinner, and a book containing copies of all of the entries for each winner. May God joyfully welcome the soul of Dr. Pizarro.

I had the great honor and privilege of working for "Dr. P" at Inter-Medic, and later at 21st Century Oncology, where he was a "babysitter" Doctor, covering while staff physicians were out of the office. He was the most dedicated, compassionate, caring physician that I have ever known. He always had a joke to tell, and he had the most infectious laugh. Even when we had a bit of trouble understanding the joke, we would laugh just because HE was laughing so hard. No one ever went hungry. His favorite was the "wonder roast" chicken sandwich, and he would buy lunch for many on our floor. Most importantly, his patients adored him, and they knew that his compassion was genuine. He would spend hours with some of them, as well as their families, explainig treatment plans and options. One of my favorite memories would be of his office, which, most of the time, you could barely get into. There were always stacks of charts on the floor, piled as high as his desk, waiting for dictation to be completed. But his time was better spent with his patients, because they were most important to him. My heart goes out to Linda and his family on the loss of this wonderful man. Know that he is being loved as much in Heaven as he was here on earth. He has joined all of the patients who have gone before him, and whose lives were better for knowing him. R.I.P. Dr P...until we meet again.

My life has been changed forever by Dr. Pizarro. I was blessed to have him as a mentor. He is responsible for me completing my nursing degree. I have known him since I was a young girl and my mother worked for him at Inter-Medic. I had such a love and passion for medicine. He was able to see the passion that we shared. In 1987 he was in search of an office nurse for his practice. He offered me the position. I had three small daughters at the time and was not really searching for full-time employment. So he convinced me to take the job temporary and on a part-time basis. Just until he could find a permanent nurse. So I agreed. We worked side by side for six years. I went back to college and completed my degree. It was with his encouragement and reinforcement that I was able to finish.
One of my fondest, and funniest, memories of Dr. Pizarro that I want to share is that he could fall asleep in any position during his long hours of work. He once told me a story about falling asleep while riding his cousin on his bike in Chile. He worked and studies such long hours that he would grab a cat nap sometimes in the middle of his sentences. He would go to his office late at night to study a patient's case that was troubling him. I knew the next day because I would be talking to him ( with my back turned) and he would start snoring. I learned that this doctor that I worked for was always studying patient cases. He was one of the finest diagnosticians in the field of medicine that I have ever known. I will miss him and all the phone consultations that we have had over the years, since his retirement. But I will never forget him. He has set the standards of practicing medicine high. God Bless his wife and his family that he was so very close to and proud of.

So sorry and sad to hear the passing of Dr. Pizarro. He was one of the sweetest,kindest, intelligent, funniest person I have ever known in my life. It was truly a pleasure to be around him. When Dr. P would see you he always would tell you an interesting story. You listened with such intensity cause you wanted not to miss a word he was saying. It was a honor and pleasure to know and work with Dr.P. I will miss him and his great smile. R.I.P Dr P.
