Our story begins on Sunday, March 24, 1935, in Leogane, Haiti, where a feisty man by the name of Andre Arius Charles was born. Andre was the youngest of seven children born to Jean Aristhene and Marie Hélène. Andre’s siblings are Hermani, and Marcille, and the late: Nevy, Vital, Arisia, and Marcianne.
Andre spent his early childhood in Leogane, part of his adulthood in Port-au-Prince and at the encouragement of his older brother Vital, he migrated to the US at the age of 36 in search of better economic opportunities for his family. On April 24th, 1971, Andre moved from the island of Haiti to the concrete jungle of Brooklyn, New York. Andre worked for 30 years in Environmental Services and retired in 2000 to move to Port Charlotte, Florida.
Although he migrated to the US, Andre’s generosity always extended back to his beloved island of Haiti, where he regularly donated to family and friends that continued to reside there. He often extended his home to family and friends in various times of need. Andre was a family-oriented man that loved to lend a helping hand whenever possible.
As a man of routine, Andre regularly tuned in to his favorite daytime game shows: The Price is Right, Let’s Make a Deal, Wheel of Fortune, and Jeopardy. He loved to cook, and his specialties included: oxtail, steak, and sos pwa. His favorite dish to bring in the New Year was Soup Joumou.
Andre was also a man of great faith. He loved attending St. James Episcopal church where he was a member of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew, an international ministry of men within the Anglican Communion.
He was also a member of the Good Samaritan Group which he helped form over 40 years ago. He was so dedicated that despite Covid-19, Andre attended zoom services with his sisters and brothers on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
On Monday, August 30th, 2021, Andre was called home by the Lord. Andre’s life was a living testimony of having great faith and displaying a love for all. One of his favorite scriptures, 1 Corinthians 13:13 states, “So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.”
Andre was a great husband, father, brother, uncle and friend and he will be missed greatly by his family and friends who loved him very much. He is survived by his wife Lifaite, his ten children: Carline, Natacha, Hélène, Rebecca, Obed, Andre, Stecker, Beatrice, Myriam and Irlande, his grandchildren: Shayla, Sanaya, Mason, Peyton, Jalen, Stanley B., Michaelly, Claire, Sophia and Stanley L., his great grandson Stanley jr., his beloved sisters Hermani and Marcille, his numerous nieces and nephews and his grandpets: Lucy-Ella, Lae and Ellie.
Visitation will be held 10:00AM-11:00AM, followed by a Funeral service at 11:00 am, Tuesday, September 7, 2021, at Roberson Funeral Home & Crematory at 2151 Tamiami Trail, Port Charlotte, FL 33948. Interment will follow to Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Port Charlotte.
