Arturo Velasquez(82) Fondly known as “Art”, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2024, in Port Charlotte, Florida surrounded by his beloved friends and family.
Art was born on March 31, 1942, in Medellin, Colombia to the late Arturo and Libia Velasquez, Art was one of nine siblings. He spent his formative years in Medellin, where he developed a passion for cycling, competing in several competitive events.
In 1962, Art embarked on a new chapter in his life, immigrating to the United States. He pursued higher education and earned a degree in Sociology from City College in New York City. In 1970 Arturo moved from New York to Florida, where he began a distinguished 30-year career with the Miami Dade County Housing and Urban Development as a property manager. It was during this time that Art met the love of his life, Ida Velasquez, at work. Upon retirement, Art and Ida embraced their love for travel, exploring five continents and visiting around 40 countries. Their adventures together were a testament to their zest for life and curiosity about the world.
Art is survived by his children, Valerie Capri-Gotay, Mari Williams, Rick Cancel, and Andrew Velasquez. He is also survived by his siblings, Conchita Aristizabel, Miryam Villegas, Irma Gonzales, Luz Pietri, Joseph Velasquez, Olga Savidge, and Jorge Velasquez. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Sean, Kraig, Brittni, Rhyse, and Eva, and his great-grandchildren, Shanelie and Yleina.
Art was a pillar of strength and generosity, always ready to lend a helping hand to family and friends. His unwavering support and love made him the cornerstone of his family. Art’s warm heart, adventurous spirit, and dedication to those he loved will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A Memorial Service will be held 2:00PM, Saturday, August 3, 2024, at Roberson Funeral Home Port Charlotte Chapel.
