Betty May Treder (nee Ottow), 85, of Punta Gorda, FL, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones in her home on Sunday, July 7, 2013.
Betty was born May 31, 1928 in Beloit, WI to Dr. and Mrs. Albert (Clara) Ottow. Her father Albert delivered her into their family of three other daughters: Marion, Lois and Carol. Betty became the loving, supportive wife to her childhood sweetheart, Richard Treder Sr. when they wed on September 4, 1949. She subsequently devoted her life to creating a caring home in which to raise five children. The family resided in Beloit, WI, Pittsburgh, PA and then settled in Munster, IN. Betty and Dick retired to Lake Suzy, FL in 1998 to be closer to family. They were gracious hosts to a constant flow of out-of-town guests. They enjoyed pool parties for their granddaughters and welcomed a grandson in while aiding him in becoming an American citizen. Betty lost her darling husband in 2009, but has had the tireless aid and companionship of her daughter Jenny, as well as all the other Treders who adored her until her passing. Betty had a remarkable, selfless dedication to all things family. She put together over thirty photo albums to mark the history, growth and togetherness of ‘The Treders.’ Betty enjoyed playing bridge and cross-stitch work. She was a voracious reader. Betty took pride in giving of herself to anyone in need. She was a beloved volunteer and tutor at the schools where two of her children teach. She rang the Salvation Army bell and was involved in the Women’s Association at Pilgrim United Church of Christ where she was a member. Betty also worked as a Welcome Wagon lady and was a past President of the Newcomer’s Club.
Betty is survived by five children: Debra (Tim) Barr-Smith of Kent, England; James (Ruth) Treder of Arcadia, FL; Jennifer Wilson of Punta Gorda, FL; David (Loren) Treder of Grand Blanc, MI and Richard Treder Jr. of Fort Myers, FL; eight grandchildren: Alicia, Alexis, Joanna, Daisy, Adrienne, Jon, Freddie and Zach; three great grandchildren: Makenzi, Roman and Lilanna and a dear sister in law, Darlene Bradley of Beloit, WI.
