Darrell L. Herrington Sr., Major U.S. Army Ret., 83, of Port Charlotte, Florida, passed away Tuesday, July 29, 2014 after battling with a long illness at Tidewell Hospice House in Port Charlotte.

Darrell was born in Kansas, Illinois May 22, 1931 to Lawrence “Boots” Herrington and Maude Tracy Herrington. He spent 22 years in the military including two tours in Vietnam.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Helen Dodge Herrington; daughters Trace (Jeff) Amburgy of Port Charlotte, Sherry Herrington of Conn., adopted daughter Maria Kazik of Conn., and Kelly Herrington and partner Liz Callahan of Port Charlotte; son, Darrell Herrington Jr. of L.A. Calf.; grandson, Christopher (Aimee) Herrington of Fla.; many nieces and nephews and his beloved grand-dogs and Chihuahuas’, Chloé and Danny.

A Memorial Gathering and Celebration of Life will be held from 2 to 4 P.M. this Saturday, August 2, 2014 at Roberson Funeral Homes Port Charlotte Chapel 2151 Tamiami Trail.

In lieu of flowers, memorial bequests in Darrell’s name are suggested to Tidewell Hospice House of Port Charlotte, or to the Animal Welfare League Inc. in Charlotte County.
