David Marshall Newell, 82, of Punta Gorda, FL and Pepperell, MA, passed away surrounded by his family on 23 Aug 2018 in Punta Gorda after a brief illness.
David served in the U.S Coast Guard as an Electronic Technician from 1956 to 1960. During this time he spent 18 months in Rhodes Greece on the USCGC Courier, a floating radio relay station for the Voice of America where VOA programs were broadcast to countries located behind the Iron Curtain. After leaving the Coast Guard, he graduated from Lowell Tech with an Associate Degree in Electronics and then worked for Air Force Cambridge Research Lab, Hanscom Air Force Base where he was involved with Gemini 5 and Gemini 7 during the early years of the space programs among other projects, retiring in 1993.
David, an avid fisherman from boyhood, was a member of Trout Unlimited, an assistant Scout Master with Boy Scout Troop 26 and President of the USCGC Courier Association for many years. In addition to fly fishing, he enjoyed camping, gardening, and the many dogs he owned over the years.
David was predeceased by his father Ray M. Newell and his mother Emily J. Newell.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years Marcia Nichols Newell, sons Mark and his wife Kathy Newell of Pepperell, MA and Robert and his wife Leona Newell of North Port, FL and daughter Lorraine (Lorri) Newell of Pepperell MA, and five (5) grandchildren Faith Newell of Worcester MA, Danielle Newell Greathead and her husband Brain of Townsend, MA, Sarah Newell of Pepperell MA, Emma Newell of Charlotte, NC, and Jacqueline Newell of Pepperell MA.
Memorial services will be held at a later date in Massachusetts.
