Dena G. Kontos,85 of Punta Gorda, Florida passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at Charlotte Regional Medical Center in Punta Gorda, April 25,2011. She was born July 20, 1925 in Kandila, Greece and moved to Punta Gorda in 1977 from Chicago,Il. with her husband George and children Andrew, Bessie and Gus. Dena was the first of her six siblings to immigrate to the U.S. in 1950. She and her husband George were instrumental in sponsoring their siblings and families during the 50’s and 60’s to immigrate to America. Dena and George took them into their home, while raising their own children, until they could get jobs and get established. She was very proud that they all became good citizens and loved them all. She truly is the Matriarch of the Prokos and Kontos families. After moving to Punta Gorda , Dena became an active member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Fort Myers, Florida, and true to her unwavering faith was a founding member in 1990 of her current church Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Port Charlotte. She was active in the Ladies of Philoptochos, the annual Greek Festival, Bible study and all aspects of Parish life. Known affectionately to one and all as Yia Yia Dena she touched everyone’s life with her love of God, people and family. Whether you knew her for a lifetime or only a few minutes she left a loving impression on everyone. Dena is survived by her son Andrew with wife Debbie and children Connie, Barbie and Thomas. Daughter Bessie with husband Nick and children Melissa, Thomas and Dena. Son Gus with wife Robin and children Tina, Alexandra, Stephanie and George. Granddaughter Tiffany and great granddaughter Adrianna. Sister Jean with husband Frank and children George and Andrew with their families. Brother Michael and wife Bessie and children Andrew, Dean, Fran and Frank and their spouses and families. Brother Gus and wife Betty and children Andrew and Fran and spouse Tom and children. Step-Daughter-in-law Donna , sister-in-law Mandy, nieces and nephews Chris, Eleni, Andrew, Fran, Fran and Betty, Andrew, Frank and Gus their spouses and children. She was preceeded in death by her husband George, her step-son Tom, her brothers George and Angelo and her sister Panayiota. That Dena loved them all is a true tribute to the size of her heart.
There will be a visitation Thursday, April 28, 2011 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM with a prayer service 7: 00 PM at Roberson Funeral Home Punta Gorda Chapel. Funeral services will be held Friday April 29, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Port Charlotte. Entombment and committal service will follow at Royal Palm Memorial Gardens in Punta Gorda. Memorial Contribution may be made to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church Building Fund – 24411 Rampart Blvd Port Charlotte, FL 33980 in Dena’s name.
