Franklin “Frank” Overbey, 71, of Port Charlotte, Florida passed away Friday, August 10, 2012 at Sterling House of Port Charlotte.

Frank was born September 13, 1940 in LaFollette, Tennessee to Edgar and Josie Bell Morton Overbey. Frank graduated with Bachelor’s degrees in history and Spanish from Lincoln Memorial University and a master’s degree in guidance education from Florida Atlantic University. In 1962, he came to Florida to teach Spanish and social studies at Charlotte High School, where he worked until his retirement in 1992. Frank enjoyed being outdoors and spent much of his free time fishing when he first came to Florida. His favorite hobby, however, was beekeeping, in which he was mentored by the late Forrest Nelson.

He is survived by his daughter, Trudy Overbey of Port Charlotte, and his son, Garry Overbey of Port Charlotte; his brother, Lewis (Carol) Overbey of Knoxville, Tenn., and two sisters Charlotte (Esco) Owens and Connie (Harold) Tackett, both of Caryville, Tenn. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Joe Ann Dagley.

Visitation will be held 6:00PM-8:00PM, Monday, August 13, 2012 at Roberson Funeral Home Port Charlotte Chapel. Additional visitation, funeral services and burial will be held at a later date at Martin-Wilson Funeral Home in LaFollette, TN.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Tidewell Hospice Inc., 5955 Rand Blvd. Sarasota, FL 34238.

Mr. Overby was my Social Studies teacher. He was witty in a sweet way--blushed easily, and was always kind & helpful.

I had Mr Overby for spanish. I guess that is why my limited spanish has a Tennessee accent. God rest his soul.

Mr. Overbey was my homeroom teacher and he was always a kind and caring man. Some of us girls were out trick or treating one Halloween and we stopped by Mr. Overby's house in Punta Gorda and he commented that we looked a little old to be out trying to collect free candy and he laughed. Then we dumped all of our candy out on the floor to show him what a great haul we had made and he was real impressed. It was so nice to see Mr Overbey in 2008 at the Class of 1966 Reunion. I was so glad that I was able to track him down and that he came. He had a good time and thanked me for inviting him. He was still the kind teacher that we all remembered. Growing up in Punta Gorda was special and we fortunate to have special teachers as part of our memories.

I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Overbey's passing. He was my favorite teacher at CHS (Class of 1966). Mr. Overbey was my Spanish II and Social Studies teacher, and he made learning fun. I will always remember him with fond memories.

Peace of mind is a call away. We’re here when you need us most.

He always had a smile for our Spanish class (and surely there must have been many times we drove him crazy!). Rest in peace, Paco.

Mr. Overbey was my favorite teacher and a good friend. Rest well my old friend.

I visited you when you were at the place on Cochran Blvd and brought you many puzzles from many of your former students.The staff there told me you were the smartest resident they had ever met. What is Dying? What is Dying? A ship sails and I stand watching till she fades on the horizon, and someone at my side says, "She is gone". Gone where? Gone from my sight, that is all; she is just as large as when I saw her... the diminished size and total loss of sight is in me, not in her, and just at the momemt when someone at my side says "she is gone", there are others who are watching her coming, and other voices take up the glad shout, "there she comes!"... and that is dying. --Bishop Charles Henry Brent--

The Class of 1975 and I remember Mr. Overby and want you to know that we are all sorry for your loss. Mr. Overby was a dynamic teacher who pushed each and every student to do their best in his class. We will always remember his large presents in our class and in our lives.
