Giovanni Giramma, 70, of Port Charlotte, Florida, passed away on Sunday, April 13, 2025, in Tampa, Florida.
Born in Italy on March 29, 1955, Giovanni was the son of the late Sisto and Angelina Giramma. He immigrated to the United States in 1958 at the age of three and grew up in Cranston, Rhode Island, alongside his parents and three siblings. Several extended family members still reside in Cranston.
After graduating high school in 1973, Giovanni proudly enlisted in the United States Navy. He was first stationed in Hawaii aboard the USS Cochran as a Machinist’s Mate, serving during the Vietnam War. Over the years, his naval service took him around the world, including postings in Bremerton, WA, and deployments to Thailand, Pakistan, Australia, and the Philippines—where he met his beloved wife, Herminigilda. The couple married in 1978 in Washington and later moved to Groton, Connecticut, where Giovanni was stationed for six years.
In 1986, Giovanni was assigned to the USS Midway in Yokosuka, Japan. He later settled in Port Charlotte, Florida, with his wife and three children, and completed a 20-year Navy career as a recruiter. He retired with the rank of MM1 (Machinist’s Mate First Class). From 1990 to 1993, his exceptional service in recruitment earned him the Navy Achievement Medal—recognizing his dedication and contributions to the U.S. Navy. Giovanni was a proud and decorated veteran.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 45 years, Herminigilda Giramma, and their children: Maria DiMaio, Kimberly Giramma, and Jason Giramma. He is also survived by his siblings, Louis Giramma and Margarita DaCosta.
In his later years, Giovanni found joy in life’s simple pleasures—gardening, caring for his yard, and sharing quiet mornings with a cup of coffee on the beach with his wife. He dreamed of visiting the USS Midway Museum in San Diego and returning to the Philippines with his wife.
A memorial service celebrating the life of Giovanni with Military Honors was held 11:00 Am on Monday, April 28, 2025, at Roberson Funeral Home located at 2151 Tamiami Trail in Port Charlotte. A private committal will be held at a later date.
