She was born in Naugatuck CT, and spent most of her adult life in Hillside Lake, NY until moving to Florida in 1984. She also enjoyed summers at the “mountain house” in Mountain Lake, NY for many years. She was a graduate of the Dinkin School of Real Estate and Business Law in Middletown, NY and was the only female licensed real estate agent in her firm of 35. She loved needlework of all kinds and just last year knitted and crocheted 25 hats for Knots of Love for cancer patients who had lost their hair. She also loved to study the Bible. She taught junior girls Sunday school from the age of 16 until she was 62. She taught English for the Literacy Volunteers of America and also volunteered with Tidewell Hospice in Florida for eleven years. She was an active member of Faith Assembly of God in Poughkeepsie, NY until her move to Port Charlotte where she was a member of Community Life Center of Port Charlotte.
Daughter of the late Adeline and Louis Lawrence, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 63 years, Van Valen Mackey, her two children, Deborah Dawn Evans and Van David Mackey, and three siblings David, Julius and Myrtle.
Visitation will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at Roberson Funeral Home Port Charlotte Chapel with a funeral service to follow at 11:00 AM at the funeral home. Interment will be in Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Florida. Memorial contributions may be made to Gideons International, PO Box 380663 Murdock, FL. 33938-0663.
