Janice Anne Johnston, 64, of Punta Gorda, Florida departed this life on September 30, 2013 at home. Breast Cancer took her away after a 20-month heroic battle.
She was born June 16, 1949 in Jersey City and grew up in Fair Lawn, New Jersey. Janice’s beloved mother Adelma and father Edward Patrick Touhey preceded her in death. Fair Lawn High School graduated Janice in 1967 before moving to Arkansas. In 1986, Janice relocated to Punta Gorda and worked for Medical Center Hospital. She had a creative spirit and additionally did art and design projects for local businesses.
In the early 90s, she showed multi-media art in regional juried shows and was a member of the Visual Arts Center. She also participated in weekly art demonstrations at Fisherman’s Village.
In 1997 she opened the very popular, Harbor Tea Room at the Harbor Inn Antique Mall at the foot of the Charlotte Harbor bridge. She offered a Victorian experience with proper tea, and original pastries. The “dress up room” with designer hats, boas, and accessories was fun for all. Sadly, all was lot in Hurricane Charley. The BBC television filmed the Tea Room and interviewed Janice as a follow up story for Charley six months after.
We will always remember Janice for her strength of character and generosity.
She is survived by her devoted Husband of 24 years, David Bruce Johnston, son Shawn Paul Eudy, granddaughter Darby Eudy, stepchildren Rhonda Drinkwater, Robert, and Ronald Gofourth; Sisters Donna Stashuk, nephew Christopher; Cassandra “Sandy” Klein, with nephews Daniel and Ryan Green feel her loss. Brothers Brian Touhey niece Adele; and Daniel and Timothy Touhey will also miss her deeply.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. this Friday, October 4, 2013 and Funeral services will begin 10 a.m. Saturday, October 5, both at Roberson Funeral Home at 215 Mary St. in Punta Gorda. Burial will follow at Royal Palm Memorial Gardens on Jones Loop Road east of I75 in Punta Gorda.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Janice’s name to Tidewell Hospice, Inc. Donations to Tidewell Hospice will help deliver considerate care to people in need with the most compassionate nurses.
