Janice Marie (Root) Hunter, 79, of Port Charlotte, Florida, went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, June 5, 2024.
Janice was born on May 30, 1945, in Plainwell, Michigan to Charles B. and Edna M. (Senholtz) Root. She married her husband of nearly 61 years, Alvis D. Hunter, on July 5, 1963, shortly after graduating High School. A month after they married, she experienced her first Military Separation, as Alvis was sent to Turkey for a year, and she moved back home to work and save money for when he returned. After years of the strength of an army wife for 23 years, moving her family and raising her children around the world, they retired in Port Charlotte, Florida, where she and Al both became Broker/Realtors. Much of her career was with Century 21 Aaward.
As an Army wife, she held many jobs, including School Bus Driver, working on an assembly line building machines, and even spent time working in the AAFES Commissary when they were stationed in Germany.
She loved camping when in Europe. She organized family adventures through Bavaria, the Swiss, Austrian and Italian Alps, camping along the Mediterranean Sea on the East Coast, and Adriatic Sea on the West Coast on the Gulf of Venice.
She volunteered not only in her Army wife community, but overseas, bringing the Girl Scouts of America to the daughters of Military personnel stationed abroad. She also worked with the Boy Scouts of America on an Army Post stateside.
Over the years, Janice was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the North Port, Port Charlotte, and Punta Gorda Association of Realtors where in 1992, she was Realtor of the year; the Women’s Council of Realtors and when in 1993, she was President; and the National Association of Realtors.
Janice is survived by her husband CSM (Ret) Alvis Hunter of Port Charlotte, FL; a daughter Dawn (Rick) Risas of Punta Gorda, FL; a son Alan (Andrea) Hunter; five grandchildren, Ashleigh (Adam) Lund of Arcadia, FL, Molly Risas of Punta Gorda, FL, Eric Risas of Scotts Valley, CA, Austin (Ellie) Hunter of Edgewater, FL, and Alana Hunter of Punta Gorda, FL; six great grandchildren, Noah, Delilah, Ezekiel and Isabelle Lund all of Arcadia, FL, and Lily and Gideon Hunter of Edgewater, FL; a sister Marilyn Anderson of Charlotte, MI, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents Charles and Edna Root, along with her brother Ronald C Root.
Visistation, funeral services and burial will be held this Monday, June 10, 2024. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until start of funeral service at 11 a.m. Monday at Roberson Funeral Homes Port Charlotte Chapel, with Committal and burial to follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens cemetery in Port Charlotte, Florida. Rev. Philip Fisher will officiate.
