John Robert “Jack” Assunto, Sr. 83, of Port Charlotte, Florida passed away Sunday, December 12, 2024, at home from esophageal cancer.
Jack was born on November 8th, 1941, at Yale New Haven in Connecticut to Joseph and Anne Assunto. He married his High School sweetheart, Janet Peterson Assunto on September 29th, 1962. He was a graduate of West Haven High School where he played football wearing number 32. He retired from a career with Consolidated Freightways trucking company holding positions as Terminal Manager, salesman and dock supervisor. He began a second career as a real estate agent serving his home community of Maple Leaf Golf and Country Club. Jack is a former resident of West Haven, Terryville, and New Milford Connecticut. He had been a resident of Maple Leaf Golf & Country Club for the past 27 years. The word most used when describing Jack is “easy”. He was a caring, loving, patient, kind, loyal human being. There are numerous accounts about the impact Jack had on others. From first time fishing stories to buying/selling homes to random acts of kindness. He adored his bride and cared for her deeply. They lived their dreams together and had many adventures including a trip to Austria to ski and many trips across the lower 48. Retirement was surrounded by friends and family visits. He was incredibly spontaneous and was always up to go to a ballgame…Major League or Little League, never mattered. Together they were amazing parents, and their grandchildren were their true pride and joy. Jack truly lived “Another Day in Paradise” and “Kept Smiling” “One Day at A Time”.
Jack is survived by his son John Assunto and daughter-in-law Kathryn Assunto of Connecticut; daughter Jayanne Sindt and son-in-law Jim Sindt of Port Charlotte, FL; Grandchildren Nicholas Assunto, Natalie Assunto and Giovanni Assunto of Connecticut; Brothers Joseph Assunto and Richard Assunto; Sister Patricia Galbraith. Jack is predeceased in death by his beloved wife Janet Assunto and brother Anthony Assunto.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 1:00pm on January 23rd 2025 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Port Charlotte followed by Internment of Ashes. A Celebration of Life will immediately follow at the Maple Leaf Golf and Country Club in the Queensway Banquet building.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to Fish and Wildlife Foundation of Florida to honor another Jack adage, “One with nature”.
