LaVaun was born September 9, 1923 on the family farm near Lone Rock, Iowa. She attended a country school and graduated from Fenton High School, Fenton, Iowa in 1940. She married Lloyd Berkland on September 21, 1941 at the country church in Fairville, Iowa. To this union four children were born. They made their home on the family farm near Ringsted, Iowa. Later moving to farms at Armstrong, Iowa. In 1965 they semi-retired and moved to Emmetsburg, Iowa. In 1976 they spent the winter months in Fort Myers, Florida. Then in 1982 they completely retired and moved permanently to Port Charlotte. LaVaun for many years was a Sunday School teacher and a 4-H leader for the Fenton Forwards 4-H Club. She also worked eleven years in the Food Service Dept. of Emmetsburg Public Schools. LaVaun loved her children and family. She loved playing cards and had a wonderful faith in God.
She is survived by a daughter, Joyce Crespin of Fort Myers, FL; two sons, Gary L. (Carolyn) Berkland of Punta Gorda, FL and Darrel (Carolyn) Berkland of Fenton, Iowa; 8 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Melvin Berkland who died in 1997.
Funeral services will be held Friday 11:00 AM, January 24, 2020 at the Lutheran Church of the Cross, 2300 Luther Rd., Port Charlotte, FL 33983. Visitation will be held at the church prior to the service from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM. Entombment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Port Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lutheran Church of the Cross or a favorite charity.
