Leo M. Doyle, 71, of Punta Gorda, Florida passed away Sunday, January 13, 2013 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Leo spent the last twenty-four years as a resident of Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda, Florida.
He was born on June 26, 1941 in Boston, Massachusetts, was the son of the late Leo P. Doyle and the late Ethel M. Doering. Leo attended Randolph High School and later graduated from Bristol Community College with an Associate’s degree in law enforcement in 1973 and continued on to earn his Bachelors of Science degree in criminal justice from Roger Williams College in 1975.
Leo also served in the US Army, 101st Airborne Division, company B, Fort Campbell, Kentucky from 1960 – 1963 and was then transferred to the US Army Reserves until 1966. While in the US Army he completed Ranger training and was subsequently promoted to Sergeant. He later went on to serve in the Rhode Island National Guard from 1975 to 1977.
He began his career as a Patrolman for the Mansfield, Massachusetts Police Department, later transferred to the Attleboro, Massachusetts Police department where he served as a Patrolman, was later promoted to Detective and retired in 1987 as a Sergeant. Upon moving to Port Charlotte, Florida, Leo opened a lot mowing business. He later went on to work for nine years at South Port Square and retired in 2012. He enjoyed spending time with long time loyal friends and grandchildren.
Leo was a member of many organizations including the Attleboro Lodge of Elks, life member; Fraternal Order of Eagles, past president; Knights of Columbus, third degree; American Legion; VFW; Loyal Order of Moose; and the Blue Knights, Chapter XVI.
Leo is survived by his son John J. Doyle of Winchester, MA; daughter Debra & son-in-law George Bosworth of Taunton, MA; 2 brothers John Doering of East Falmouth, MA and Bob Doering of MA; grandchildren Jessica, Shannon, Patrick, Nicholas and Stephen Bosworth of Taunton, MA, Devlin Doyle of Sarasota, FL and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by daughter Tammy J. Doyle, son Leo P. Doyle, wife Donna R. Doyle, brother William and sisters Marie Dowd and Joan Tiffany.
Family and friends are kindly invited to attend visiting hours on Thursday, January 17, 2013 from 2 – 4 pm and 5 – 7 pm followed by a memorial service at 7pm at Roberson’s Funeral home, 215 Mary Street, Punta Gorda, Florida.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the charity of one’s choice in honor of Leo’s charitable nature. Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home & Crematory Punta Gorda Chapel.
