He was born May 3, 1926 in Elizabeth, New Jersey and resided in New Jersey until relocating to Florida 26 years ago. Mr. Conte was a US Navy World War II veteran, serving in the Canal Zone, Eastern Sea Frontier, and the Mediterranean. After leaving the Navy, he served in the 699th Engineer Co. of the US Army Reserve.
Mr. Conte was CEO of Teamsters Union local 866 until retiring to Holiday, Florida in 1986. There he became a real estate broker in the Tarpons Springs area, and later in Port Charlotte. He went on to become the developer and president of Tern Bay Enterprises in Punta Gorda. Mr. Conte was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Punta Gorda, the Knights of Columbus Lodge #8094, the Elks, American Legion, and the Punta Gorda Boat Club. He was also a devoted benefactor of the Peace River Wildlife Center, Inc.
He is survived by his wife Kathryn E. Conte; three sons, Robert C. (Diana) Conte of Lincroft, NJ, Anthony W. (Dorothy) Conte of Wallace, NC, and William R. Conte of South River, NJ; two grandchildren, Nicole and Erica Conte of Lincroft, NJ; his extended family Katherine (Martin Harrell) Hodgkiss, Karol (Scott Knudson) Conrad, James (Diane) Hodgkiss, Kelsey and Gregory, many nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and his beloved dog “Charlie.” He was predeceased by his spouse, Esther G. Conte, and a brother, Anthony E. Conte.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 23, 2012 from 6-8 PM at Roberson Funeral Home Punta Gorda Chapel with a Catholic Wake Service at 7 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday 11:30 AM, May 24, 2012 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Punta Gorda. Entombment with military honors by the U.S. Navy will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Port Charlotte, Florida.
In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to Peace River Wildlife Center, Inc., 3400 W. Marion Ave., Punta Gorda, FL 33950 or to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 211 W. Charlotte Ave., Punta Gorda, FL 33950. Friends may visit online at www.robersonfh.com to sign the memory book and extend condolences to the family.
