Leonie was born in Haiti in the northwest city called Derac. At the age of 2, she was brought to Arcahaie and later to La Gonave. She was enrolled at Saint Bernadette Elementary School in Anse-A-Galets and later attended a private school in Riviere-Froide until middle school. She then pursued her education at College Moderne High School in Cite Manigat before continuing her studies at a business School. In May 1981, Leonie left Haiti for New York where she met her husband, Jean Marie Cantave. They married in 1984 and later moved to Massachusetts where they built a loving home together. She was blessed with two wonderful children, Jonathan Cantave and Jozmaelie Cantave whom she cherished dearly.
Leonie was a devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend. Survivors include her beloved husband, Jean Marie Cantave; her son, Jonathan Cantave and daughter, Jozmaelie Cantave; her siblings, Leonne, Anna, Billy and Walter as well as nieces, Farah, Elsie, Joana, Magalie, Sonite, Islande, Dieudona, Marjorie and Ketly; her nephews, Jentel, Zaph, Gregory, Roobens, Noe, Jean Marie and Pierre; her cousins, Claudia, Marie, Marthe, Claudette, Jecelyne, Guerda, Josiane, Maryse, Marie Carmel, Rosie, Marie Michelle, Karl, Thony, Jose, James, Patrick, Yves Andre, Smith, Reginald, Wesley, Yves, Rene and a host extended family members and dear friends who will miss her deeply.
Leonie will be remembered for her kindness, wisdom and unwavering love for her family. Though she is no longer with us, her legacy of love and faith will forever live on in the heart of those who knew her.
Visitation will be held 9:30AM-10:30AM with a funeral service to follow at 10:45AM, Saturday, March 1, 2025 at Eben-Ezer Haitian Baptist Church in Port Charlotte. Entombment will follow to Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Port Charlotte, FL.
