Melville Dutch Brandstetter, died peacefully on March 24, 2009 at
his Florida winter home.
Dutch was born on November 17, 1930 to Emogene Spear Ori and
Melville Brandstetter in Plattsburgh, New York. Before entering college, he
proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps. One of his duties was as a Presidential
Guard to Harry Truman at Key West’s Little White House.
Dutch graduated with an M.S. from Plattsburgh St. University. He taught 37 years
on Long Island, NY, mainly with Farmingdale Public Schools where he also coached at the Jr. and Sr. High levels.
He married his wife, Pat Hayes, on Long Island and raised exotic pheasants and ducks as a hobby. Upon retirement, they bought an apple orchard in Gettysburg, PA.
Where Dutch raised miniature Irish Dexter cows and miniature horses. Their Jack Russell, Shorty, joined them at that time.
Dutch loved to travel; he and Pat made many new friends on their European and Caribbean cruises. His love of he outdoors, gardening, wildlife, history and sports made
many people smile. He will be missed, but not forgotten.
Besides his wife, Dutch leaves behind his stepmother Evelyn Brandstetter of Plattsburgh, NY; three brothers, David wife- Carol Ori of Hummelstown, PA, George
wife-Marie Ori, Jr. of Willsboro, NY, Gary Brandstetter of Plattsburgh,PA; one sister,
Diane husband-Barry Babij of Folsom, CA. He also survived by nieces, nephews and
their families.
Dutch will be buried in St. Ignatius Loyola Cemetery in Buchanan Valley. PA
a memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, Memphis TN 38101,
