Nancy Louise McCarty, of Punta Gorda, Florida, on Wednesday, January 13, 2021, loving mother, wife and friend Nancy passed away in her sleep at the age of 68.
Nancy came into this world giggling and smiling on May 10, 1952 in Des Plaines, Illinois to the late Michael (Mike) and Wallace (Wally) Scheafer. During her childhood, Nancy was surrounded by lots and lots of family in her hometown of Des Plaines. She also had fond memories of train rides from Des Plaines to Oklahoma to visit her mother’s family. Nancy worked as a dental assistant upon graduation from high school.
In 1972 she met the love of her life in Atlanta Georgia while visiting a close cousin Jo Schaefer. She always commented that she met her husband on a Saturday midnight date because he had to study for a test. They got engaged in Des Plaines during Christmas of 1972 and married in August 1973. They remained married until her passing.
She lived in Tennessee for 3 years, then Arkansas for 7 years, moving to Alaska for 30 years interrupted by 2 years in Indonesia, where she was an expatriate queen. She always commented that her husband, Ralph, who was from Florida had stated when they got married that he would “never” move to where it was cold. She loved Alaska and the extended family that she developed. She especially loved and valued the Bunco Babes group that developed while in Alaska. They were like a fun loving, close knit group that supported each other in good times and sad times.
Upon retirement, she and her husband moved to Florida, his home state mainly because she loved the water, warm weather and sunsets over the water. She loved to travel and experience life, always with a kind word and smile on her face. She will always be remembered as a person that always had a positive outlook on life. She had just completed lymphoma cancer treatment and was in remission. The doctors were amazed with her positive, can do attitude. She made everyone smile and laugh. She was tickled with the engagement of her youngest son at Christmas of 2020.
Nancy is survived by her husband Ralph, three sons, Ryan of Sarasota, Florida; Keith of Redmond, Oregon; and Scott and his fiancé Vian Nguyen of Houston, Texas.
Due to the current pandemic situation there will not be a service per say. Due to her low immune system she was adamant about not attending any gatherings. We are planning on a celebration of her life on Mother’s Day May 9th (1 day before her birthday) with the immediate family and friends that would like to attend. Nancy’s favorite time was sunset over Siesta Key Beach during the impromptu beating of the Circle of Drums performance. During this time, we will spread her ashes in the water.
