Ronald G. Mills, 70, of Punta Gorda, Florida, died unexpectedly Wednesday, February 3, 2021 at Fawcett Memorial Hospital, Port Charlotte, Florida.
Ron was born on October 25, 1950 and grew up in New Lexington, Ohio. As a boy he explored the hills of southern Ohio and reveled in his summers with his cousins in Mt. Storm, West Virginia. He graduated from the University of West Virginia with a B.S. and enjoyed a lifetime career with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Parks and Recreation, first working as a State Naturalist and later as a Program Administrator. Ron and his wife Tobi retired to Punta Gorda in 2004 from Ohio. Ron never lost his enchantment with the natural world and he loved to share it with others. As President of the Peace River Audubon Society, he shared his enthusiasm for conservation and education. Ron also shared his love of nature through his art. His friendly, warm presence and artistic talent were a part of the Punta Gorda Farmer’s Market where he shared “Florida Reclaimed” with Tobi for ten years. His painting and note cards of natural Florida, and “only Ron’s sense of humor” cartoons can be found in area homes and across the country as “snowbirds” returned regularly to visit him at the booth. Ron’s vision of natural life along the Peace River and his quirky cartoons can be seen both outside and inside at the Nav-A-Gator Bar and Grill. Ron had a commitment to giving back and helping others. He was a lifetime member of the Lions Club International, being involved with the Punta Gorda Lions Club for over sixteen years. He also served on the board of the Early Learning Coalition of Florida’s Heartland.
Ron is survived by his best friend and wife of 44 years, Tobi Mills, by his beloved Aunt Barb, brothers-in-law and their families in Virginia and Texas, and close cousins in Ohio, Florida, and across the country.

Ron had a way of making each person he met feel special and important. His gentle kind heart and joyful humor infected everyone around him. May his memory be a blessing to all he encountered.

I just heard about this sad news. I always enjoyed working with Ron over the years. Such a happy and pleasant person. He will be missed by many.

Ron's passing is a loss to so many who knew him or were privileged to have experienced him at work. Although not mentioned in his obituary Ron served on the Board of Fairfield County Historical Parks. His guidance and support were invaluable in making sure that the parks survived and that they are a vital part in improving the quality of life for so many. A musician, an artist and magician, Ron brought joy and the love of nature to all he met. He will never be replaced. Our most sincere condolences to Tobi and his family.

Tobi, So sorry to hear of Ron's death. Seems like a zillion years ago since Land Lab days at New Lex. Ron was a great guy. I remember picking up a huge owl that had been killed on the highway and called him to see if he wanted it. He took it to stuff or whatever, but warned me not to do it again because it was against the law to be in possession of even a dead one!!! I, too, lost my husband recently. Stay strong and be thankful for the time you had together, but accept that you will have some crappy days. Tobi- What a shock! We are so sorry for your loss. We always thought there would be more late night coffee stops. We still tell the story about hiding in the woods in the middle of the night when Ron was trying to “call in” wild animals and he accidentally called in the park rangers. I think about going to the swamp Fly fishing for the big bluegills, and Ron helping me back into the boat after I fell out, and me helping him when he stepped into a hole and his waders filled up with water. There is no doubt that Ron will be greatly missed by family, friends, and nature and art lovers. Tobi, please call us and make plans to come to Greenville. (Connie 740-215-9994)

We first met Ron on a bird walk. His kindness, smile, knowledge, artistry and generous nature will all be missed by those who knew him. Sending sincere condolences to Tobi and his family. Tobi, I am heart broken for you at the loss of your best friend, your husband. I will miss Ron, he was such a joy always smiling making everyone he came in contact with feel special. He was always in touch with the CHS LEO Club not want to miss anything, for the Big Cat. I am truly sorry , so glad he left amazing memories and a smile that was unforgettable and contagious. Ron was a special person and will be missed I have known him thru Lions as well as the antique business. He was extremely talented artist and always had kind words to say about everyone. Our prays and condolences to Tobi and his family. RIP my dear friend.

Our heartfelt condolences go to Tobi and family. Working with Ron to build a float for the Christmas parade between the Port Charlotte Lions and the Punta Gorda Lions was a beginning of a great friendship. His dedication to Lionism and other organizations showed how much he truly gave back to his community.

Ron Mills was a very active member of the Punta Gorda Lions Club having served as President and most recently as Membership Chair. His leadership guided the Club to expand our community outreach that provided vision and hearing care. He was the award winning editor of our Lions newsletter, "The Big Cat Connection." Our prayers are with Tobi and family.

We were so sorry to learn of Ron's passing. We will remember Ron when experiencing the natural world that he loved so much.

We were so very saddened to hear of Ron's passing. He was a long time Board member and officer for the Early Learning Coalition of Florida's Heartland. and a great advocate for high quality programs for at-risk children and families; his gentle leadership and active engagement helped to positively shape our organization.
