
Ronald “Ron” Herr, 86, of Port Charlotte, FL, passed away on Wednesday, June 21st, 2017, in Port Charlotte.
Ron was born January 13, 1931 in Manheim Township, Pennsylvania to the late Benjamin and Julia Herr. Following high school, Ron joined the U.S. Army Airborne, and served as a paratrooper during the Korean War. After the war, he began a career in Aviation as an Air Traffic Controller, and would meet and marry fellow air traffic controller, Patricia Smith in 1970. Together they raised four children near where they were stationed at the Indianapolis Airport. Following retirement from air traffic control, they moved from Indiana to Port Charlotte in 1984. Already a member of the American Legion, he joined Post 110 in Port Charlotte and garnered more than 50 years as a member. He was also a member of the Loyal Order of Moose and B.P.O. Elks, also in Port Charlotte.
In addition to his parents, Ron was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Herr; his wife Patricia in 2008, and friend and faithful companion Agnes G Konings in 2016. Ron is survived by his four children, Ronald (Jane) Herr, Jr. of IN, Troy Herr of Port Charlotte, FL, Heidi Odem of IN, and Tara (Joe) Talon of Port Charlotte, FL; a brother, Frank (Ginny) Herr of Port Charlotte, FL; four grandsons, one granddaughter, one great granddaughter, and numerous extended family members and friends.
A Celebration of Life ceremony for Ron will be held 4 p.m. this Friday, July 14, 2017, at Roberson Funeral Home, 2151 Tamiami Trail, in Port Charlotte. Rev. Lyle Truitt will officiate with veterans honors rendered by American Legion Post 110.
