Rudolf “Rudy” A. Schumacher, of Port Charlotte, Florida, formerly of Holland, Michigan, passed away peacefully Thursday, May 1, 2014 at Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte.
Born December 15, 1931 in New York City’s Queens Borough to the late Anni and Johanne Schumacher, Rudy, a veteran of the U.S. Navy, was a technology engineer, and worked 4 years with Bell Labs and 27 years with IBM before retiring. A part time resident of Port Charlotte since 2003, Rudy became a fulltime resident of Port Charlotte in August 2013. Rudy enjoyed many activities, but none more than those with his family. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Rudy is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy (formerly Boer) Schumacher; sons Robert (Lisa) Schumacher, and Richard Schumacher; daughter Karen (Tim) Cockayne; ten grandchildren, Chris, Paul, Kelly, Daniel, Michael, Jane, and Bill Schumacher, Matthew, Elliot, and Peter Cockayne; brothers Henry (Doris) Schumacher, and August (Erika) Schumacher; step-son Marlin (Laurie) Boer, and step-daughter Melissa (Eric) Haas; four step-grandchildren, Todd Marten, Jonathan Andrew, Lisette, and Morgan Boer; and many extended family members. In addition to his parents, Rudy was preceded in death by his first wife, Elsie.
A Memorial service celebrating Rudy’s life will be held 10:00 A.M. this Monday, May 5, 2014, at South Port Square’s Town Center Hall in Port Charlotte. Further services and burial will be held in Holland, Michigan and Newington, Connecticut at a later date.
