Sherrell J. Magnant, 76, of Punta Gorda, Florida passed away Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at Tidewell Hospice House in Port Charlotte.

She was born April 1, 1937 in Providence, Rhode Island to the late Elmer R. and Muriel V. (nee-Kettelle) Smith, and moved from Narragansett, R.I. to Sarasota, Florida before settling in Punta Gorda in 1997. Sherrell was a member and President of the North Kingstown Fire Belles and served as member of the Narragansett Zoning Board of Review.

She is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Joseph N. Magnant; son, James D. (Kathleen) Magnant; grandchildren, Jacob C. Magnant and Christopher J. Magnant; brother, Barry M. (Eleanor) Smith of North Kingstown, R.I.; several nieces and a nephew. In addition to her parents, Sherrell was preceded in death by her eldest son, Joseph N., Jr. in 2004.

A Committal service followed by interment will be held 3:00 p.m. Monday, December 2, 2013 at Sarasota National Cemetery in Sarasota, Florida.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Sherrell’s name to Tidewell Hospice House of Port Charlotte.

We'll always remember the enjoyable times we spent together going out to lunch or playing dominoes with Sherrell and Joe. As we recall some of those times, we will never forget her contagious laughter. She was a special person and friend to us during the winter months that we spent in Punta Gorda. Even when we left, she'd graciously offer to "keep an eye" on things for us while we were gone. You couldn't ask for a better friend! She will be be missed.
