It is with great sadness that the family of Stephen Michael Moskwa announces his passing at home on September 14, 2024, at the age of 77. Steve was born on January 1, 1947, in Manhattan, NY to Stephen and Mary Anne Moskwa.
Steve was a Veteran of the US Army and proudly served his country as an MP from July 1966 to July 1968. Upon his honorary discharge, he worked in the construction field until being hired as a patrolman by the Ramapo Police Department in Suffern, NY. Steve was promoted to detective and retired in June of 2001, after 23 years of dedicated service. Steve and his wife Susan (“Suzz,” as he affectionately called her), relocated to Port Charlotte, FL where they loved to play golf, boat, and fish.
Steve is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Susan; his four children: Stephen Jr. (Wendy), Louise Espeleta (Damon), Bridget Coleman (Dave), and Jack; his seven grandchildren: Jenna, Stephen, River, Noah, Griffin, Stephanie (Brettly), Jack Jr.; and seven great-grandchildren: Paislee, Ronald, Aubriann, Halo, Asher, Jasper, and Noelle. He is also survived by his sisters, Cathy Engleman and Mary Ellen O’Sullivan; many nieces and nephews; and his Shih Tzus, Joey and Dixie. Steve is preceded in death by his and Susan’s infant daughter, Amanda; his sisters, Jean Parker and Annie Hasbrouck; his brother, Joseph; and his parents.
Steve’s children and grandchildren meant the world to him; they were the center of his universe, filling his life with boundless love and purpose. Steve looked forward to their daily phone calls-a cherished ritual that brightened his day and reminded him of the love they shared, no matter the distance.
Steve had a lifelong passion for sports, but nothing captured his heart quite like his beloved New York Jets. Through every season’s ups and downs, he remained their steadfast fan. Sundays were sacred; he’d don his green and white jersey, ready to ride the roller coaster of emotions that came with being a Jets fan. Win or lose, he held out hope every season, believing that someday they’d rise to the top and win another Super Bowl.
A Mass will be held at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Port Charlotte, FL. Following Mass, Steve will be laid to rest with military honors at Sarasota National Cemetery in Sarasota, FL. For information on the date and time, contact a family member. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Steve’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the March of Dimes, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the American Cancer Society, or the American Heart Association.
