Wally was born on December 17, 1936 in Orange, New Jersey to the late Dorothy and Irving Sadoff. Wally held academic degrees from Drew University and Rutgers University. Wally served in the U.S. Army, and upon honorable discharge, he pursued his passion for education, working as a guidance counselor in several Long Island, NY school districts, including Smithtown Central School District and Great Neck Public Schools. Early in his career, Wally became well-known for innovating new counseling approaches in the areas of substance abuse and addiction treatment.
After his retirement Wally became a full-time resident of Florida in 2003. He continued to work as a part-time consultant with the Boys and Girls Club for several years following official retirement. Wally and his dear wife Phyllis were often thought of as a single unit by their friends and family. They were almost never apart, and doted on each other constantly. They first laid eyes on each other in 1991—across a crowded room at the Y—and married on June 25, 1995, commencing a love affair for the ages. Wally and Phyllis treated life as an adventure filled with fortune and excitement, and loved traveling the globe to far-flung and diverse locales. They made friends wherever they went, and felt as comfortable in Paris, London, Beijing and the Caribbean, as they did in New York and Port Charlotte. Together, this power couple shared a personal warmth, lust for life, and obvious adoration for each other—a potent brew that resulted in first-class upgrades, magical experiences, and a lifetime of cherished memories.
Athletic from a young age, Wally played basketball as a guard in high school and college, and was an avid golfer and tennis player throughout his life, as evidenced by his multiple Club Championships at his home course at Riverwood Golf Club. With Phyllis, he hosted social gatherings for their many friends at their homes in Port Charlotte and previously, Southold, NY. He loved live music, the theater, and dining out at Southwest Florida’s best restaurants.
Wally touched the lives of all who met him. He was a wise, kind, warm, and engaging man with a clever wit. Wally didn’t suffer fools, and was fiercely loyal to his family. Above all, he loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who all knew him lovingly as “Pop-Pop.”
Wally is survived by his children Leslie (Chris) Moon of Leesburg, Virginia, Ted (Maria) Goldwyn of Corning, NY, Kim (Guy) Abbate of Riverview, FL, and Jeffrey (Helen) Sadoff of Selden, NY; grandchildren Jason (Jamie) Smith, David (Lizzie) Smith, Sean (Jess) Goldwyn, Noah (Lee) Goldwyn, Kyle Hill, Neila Goldwyn, Emily Sadoff, and Jonah Goldwyn; and great-grandchildren Rosemary, Larkin, Keaton, Tyson, and Hutch Wally. He is also survived by many special cousins, nieces, and nephews. In addition to his parents, Wally was predeceased by Phyllis, his beloved wife of nearly 30 years, along with his loving sister and brother-in-law Phyllis and Harold Harris.
Jewish graveside services and interment will be conducted at Sarasota National Cemetery, Sarasota, Florida, Tuesday, May 20, 2025 at 11:00 AM. Rabbi Michael Shefrin will officate with military honors by a U.S. Army Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Wally’s name may be made to: Breakthrough T1D (breakthrought1d.org) in support of children with Type 1 diabetes.
