I knew Joe from my time growing up in Manhasset. He was a wonderful young man, liked and respected by all. He was handsome smart, intelligent and kind. I was shocked to learn of his death tonight while coming upon this obituary by accident. I am sure he rests in peace. God bless his wife and extended family.

Susan: May care and love of those around you provide comfort and peace. Sally and I extend our most sincere condolences.
I am honored and blessed to have known, Joe. He was my commanding officer, my mentor, my friend. He provided me with wise counsel, direction, compassion and a kick in the ass when I needed it. His presence brought confidence, courage, and a keen sense of humor during trying and uncertain times. I am eternally grateful for his friendship. On Christmas day, 1990, at Jubail Airport in Jubail, Saudi Arabia, Joe asked me if I would don a Santa Claus suit to hand out Christmas gifts to the Marines in our headquarters unit. I forget the exact number of Marines present, but from what I recollect we numbered about 65. I was unaware that Joe and our XO, Randy Norton, had ventured to Manama, Bahrain days before on a shopping trip where they purchased a Santa Claus outfit and gifts for every Marine. I agreed to play Santa Clause which brought a smile to Joe's face, and that evening, Joe handed me a sea bag filled with gifts. He then handed me a small package and said, Marry Christmas. I opened the gift saying thank you, sir, and discovered an audio tape of Beatles music. Joe used to tease me about always having my Walkman ear buds in my ears listening to music. I still have that tape and will always remember that moment when Joe handed it to me. Shortly thereafter, Joe introduced me (Santa Claus) to the mass of Marines gathered near the TACC. Each Marine received their small gift, all of them paid for by Colonel Joe Della-Corte. It wasn't the best Christmas I ever experienced, but it is the most memorable. Everyone that evening walked away with the Christmas spirit with feelings of joy and laughter. We all had a job to do back then and together we faced a very uncertain future. But I for one felt and believed we had one hell of a Commanding Officer to lead us, and that we would follow him wherever his path would lead. I loved Joe Della-Corte, we all did, and I was damn proud to be one of "his" officers. Now he is no longer with us, but this separation is only temporary.
So, Colonel Della-Corte ... Thank you, sir, for a life of honor, grace, and friendship. Until we meet again. Semper Fidelis!
Peace of mind is a call away. We’re here when you need us most.
My heart goes out to Susan and her family. Joe and my father, Keith Stivers, were very close friends going back to their days as young Marines. They crossed paths many times throughout their military career and as such, we got to know Joe well growing up. After college I moved to San Diego, an hour south of Joe when he lived in Laguna Niguel. My roommate and I loved going up to visit for dinner and a glass (or two) of cognac. Our conversations would go well into the evening. I worked as a bartender at the time so Joe hired me to work the bar at one of his parties. I had a great time meeting many Marines that had worked with my father. And Joe, being the great tipper that he was, paid me quite handsomely for the few hours I worked. He was a great a great Marine and a incredible person and a true friend. He was a huge inspiration to me as a young man and will be missed very much.
Susan: Bill and I send you our love, prayers, and deep respect.
Thank you Joe for your leadership and friendship. Sincere condolences to Susan and your family. I will always remember you. We´ll see you again. Semper Fidelis,

Joe's smile and kindness will be missed. He was a wonderful man.
I never had the privilege of working with Joe while he was on active duty though when we met through his wife Susan after his retirement, his reputation had preceded him. Joe was a loving husband, a proud father and a genuine professional. In a world with few truly good men, Joe was a good man and the kind of person that made you better simply by being around him. Denise and I send our sincere condolences to Susan and his family.
You will forever be remembered and missed dearly.
Our prayers and sympathy are with you Susan and your whole family at this difficult time.
Susan, Denise & I send our condolences. The Colonel was a pleasure to be with, whether it be on the golf course, working with him on the golf committee or after our Tuesday Mafia. He was a good man and will be missed.

I had the privilage of working with Joe in the Marine Corps and with Raytheon. A gentleman without peer, a fine officer, terrific businessman, splendid husband and father. And may I add I had the distinct pleasure of working with Susan. Together they were an extraordinary team. This news is very sad for those of us who had the privilage of knowing Joe. I rode in the cart with him Tuesday and we had a couple of drinks after. He was in good sprit and left to give get well cards to Don S. Always thinking of helping others. He was a good golfer, a good friend and a good person. I will miss him

Precious and fun memories surround this sad time of loss. For many years, Joe was my neighbor, friend, and played a significant role of a male role model to my daughter in her early years. He attended pre-school activities with her and even wore a green plastic tie that she had made him for a St Patty's Day event. It was not a very pretty tie, but he wore it with pride...such the man he was. He even dressed up in his Marine Corp Blues to lead the back yard services of Toby the rat, her dear pet, when he passed. It was hard to keep a straight face while watching Joe and other neighbors take Toby's passing so seriously...but he officiated one heck of a service and my daughter just loved it and him. Susan, I know your heart must be breaking as you and Joe were truly soul mates. It was obvious from the first time I saw the two of you together that true love abounded. Bless you as you heal and try to make sense of this loss and the days ahead. I also want to thank Joe, as I have so so many times for his brave service to our beloved country. I will remember him with a smile in my heart and with respect for the man he was.
RIP Joe You will be missed by so many. Prayers going out to the family. May you take comfort in memories of your time spent with Joe. He has been given his wings and now an angel watching over all of you.
