David Alvarez, 74, of Punta Gorda, Florida, passed away Thursday, March 20, 2025.

David, from New Haven Connecticut where he graduated from Southern Connecticut State University, was for many years the editor in chief of the Connecticut Artists Magazine and a free/lance writer whose fiction, nonfiction, and essays appeared in various publications throughout New England. He is the author of two published novels, The Mayan and Rebel Blood, a Novel of Jesse James.

He resided in Punta Gorda, Florida with his wife Bertie, where he played as a musician and retired from Sarasota County’s North Port High School as a history teacher. He was a bass player with The Boogiemen for 35 years in Charlotte County. He has played 172 Charity Events for our Veterans, Children and Non-Profits with The BoogieMen.

He is survived by his wife, Bertie Alvarez, his two children Erika Planer and Alex Alvarez, and a sister, Maggie Clement. He has four, soon to be five beautiful grandchildren whom he adored.

He was my U.S. History teacher at NPHS last year. I looked forward to starting my school days with his funny humor and positive attitude. He always started his classes with a joke. I feel so grateful I got to have him as my teacher the year before his retirement. I will always cherish those moments in class because of him.

Dave and I go back to kindergarten, through Jonathan Law and for a time we lived together after college. He introduced me to my wife Barbara Baffa who worked at the El. I am still reeling from the news. I always meant to visit but life got in the way. We did keep up on FB where I left comments. He was a good friend. May his memory be a blessing. Ron

David was an amazing human being and the kindest soul. He was a fellow teacher and mentor to me in my first years and throughout my college years. He was always encouraging and someone I continued to look forward to seeing when I got to play with the Boogiemen. He will be missed and I will never hear “Soul man” the same ever again.
