It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Irving Steven Batts of Port Charlotte, Florida, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend who left us too soon on Monday, December 9, 2024 at the age of 84.
Born on November 2, 1940 in New Haven, Connecticut, Irving was a man of great character, known for his hard work, kindness, and dedication to his family. Throughout his life, he touched the hearts of many with his generosity and wisdom. Irving left his Hamden, CT home in 2000 to retire to Florida to enjoy relaxing days drinking Heineken and sharing Sunday mimosas with his wife. Irving was a guiding light and a fierce supporter of his children. His grandchildren remember him as grandpa or “Poppy,” a source of endless stories, laughter, and life lessons. To his great-grandchildren, he was a gentle, loving presence with a twinkle in his eyes. Irving was not only a family man but also a respected member of the community. As a volunteer at HCA Florida Fawcett Hospital for 20 years, his legacy of hard work, integrity, and compassion will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him. Irving sailed around the world with his wife on over 100 cruises and used his culinary skills to grill for his loved ones. He had an infectious laugh and was a caring friend. He enjoyed sports, especially his Dallas Cowboys, loved photography, and smooth jazz.
Irving is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ruth Ann Batts; 3 children, David Allen Batts of the Netherlands, D. Lynn Batts of Joppa, MD, and Latisha Marie Batts of Charlotte, NC; 7 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren. Irving was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Carrie Batts; son, Keith Richard Batts; brother, Richard Batts; and sister, Estelle Cohen.
