Steve Bybel, 89, of Port Charlotte, FL, passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2014.

Steve was born in Scottdale, Pennsylvania on September 2, 1924, to the late Nicholas and Mary (nee – Pluta) Bybel. Steve was a Navy veteran, serving in World War II (PT Boat 480) as a Gunner’s Mate. He retired from Midwest Steel Corporation of Indiana. He moved with his wife, Eva Mae (nee – Sanders) Bybel, from their longtime home of Portage, Indiana to Port Charlotte in 1987. A member of the Catholic faith, Steve enjoyed the Florida lifestyle for 27 years. An avid golfer, Steve enjoyed playing eighteen holes of golf as often as he could.

Steve is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 65 years, Eva Mae Bybel; his sister, Helen Bitner of PA, three daughters, Diana Lee Bybel (fiancé James W. Redmon) of Port Charlotte, Valerie Jean Adams of IN, and Stephanie Blackman of Port Charlotte; four grandchildren, James K. Adams of CA, Tina Beth (Husband – John) Yelen of IL, Steve Douglas (Wife – Adrian) Conner of FL, and Shawn C. Adams of FL; and three great grandchildren, Todd A. (Wife – Lori) Baker of IN, Amber Lynn Conner of TX, Easton Conner of FL and longtime friend, Jack Yurick. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by three brothers and five sisters.

In accordance with Steve’s wishes, there will be no services, and his ashes will be scattered in the Gulf. In lieu of flowers, memorial bequests are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Uncle Steve, I can never repay you and aunt Eva for your kindness when I was a young boy. Your family always treated me as an adult and respected me as a young man. You trusted me with your car when I was only 16 years old. Not many people would do that but you did. There was always kind words and loving advice that formed my leap into adulthood. I always considered you as a father figure and I looked at you as someone I wanted to be like. I will miss you very much. These tears are not waisted but indicate my love for you. Dear Steve, You were a treasure to know and I will always hold the memories of your kindness in my heart. Your door was always open to me and Emily and I will always be grateful to you for including us in your home and family.

Dad, knowing you are watching over us now gives me some peace. You will ALWAYS be my hero and I will miss you so much till I see you again. I love you Dad.
