Lieutenant Colonel Charles “Chuck” White, U.S. Army Ret., 93 died on Friday, December 12, 2014 at Tidewell Hospice House in Port Charlotte, FL.
Chuck was born in Fort Bliss, Texas on June 8, 1921, the son of Master Sergeant Charles I White Sr. and Mary Jane Murray White. LTC White was a veteran of WWII (Pacific) and the Korean Conflict. After tours of duty in nine different states and four foreign countries, LTC White retired from the Army with 28 years of service. He settled his family in Port Charlotte in 1965 where he worked for General Development Corporation and was a Purchasing Agent for the Charlotte County School District.
Chuck was a dedicated American Soldier who served his country with distinction; even serving as a Paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne. LTC White received the following awards and commendations during his Army career: Combat Infantryman’s Badge with 2nd award, Master Parachutist Badge, Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Asian Pacific Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Army Occupation Medal (Japan), Army Occupation Medal (Berlin), National Defense Service Medal with one Oak Leaf cluster, Korean Service Medal, United Nation Korean Service Medal, and the Korean Presidential Citation.
He will be greatly missed by his daughters and sons-in-law, Maymie King and Bob Warren (Port Charlotte), Margee and Jack Hall (Mauldin, SC), and daughter-in-law Kay White (Kissimmee). “Papa” White was dearly loved and respected by his nine grandchildren: Mary Cay White McCullough, JC White, Chris Hall, Matthew King, Charlie Hall, John D Hall, Morgan King, JJ White, and Megan White Larson and 13 great grandchildren. Chuck was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Mary Katherine O’Neill White in 2003; his second wife, Phyliss Trembly White in 2013; and his two sons, John C White (2011) and Joe White (2012).
Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00pm. on Sunday, December 21, 2014 at Roberson Funeral Home, 2151 Tamiami Trail, Port Charlotte. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:30 a.m. Monday, December 22, at St Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 2500 Easy St, Port Charlotte, FL. LTC White will be buried with full military honors at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, 1380 Forrest Nelson Blvd, Port Charlotte.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Tidewell Hospice (Port Charlotte), Philanthropy Department, 5955 Rand Boulevard, Sarasota, FL 34238 or to Fort Bragg Fisher House at 12 Bassett St, Fort Bragg, NC 28307. Fisher House is a support facility for the families of wounded soldiers at Fort Bragg, home of the 82nd Airborne Division.
