Alvin Sinclair Hodge Jr. 80, of Port Charlotte, Florida died on Monday, August 10, 2026, at his residence surrounded by his loving family.

On August 21, 1945, a beautiful baby boy was born to Alvin Sinclair Hodge and Daisy Mae Hodge. They named their son Alvin Sinclair Hodge Jr. Growing up, Alvin became a man of extraordinary character, known for his honor, kindness, respect, and generosity. He was a man of many talents and held strong moral principles, a devoutly honest and God-fearing individual who cherished his family with unwavering patience and faithfulness.

Alvin’s passion for his faith was evident in his roles as a lay preacher in the Wesleyan Holiness Church and his visits to the sick at St. Thomas Hospital. His profound love and devotion to the Lord Jesus Christ were truly exemplary, and his dedication to serving others was a profound source of joy for him. Each Sunday, the hospital visits were a cherished part of his routine, providing not only spiritual support but also an opportunity to share the love and comfort of Christ with those who needed it most.

Alvin’s diverse skills led him on various paths throughout his life. Earlier, during his teenage years, he sang calypso music with “The Selma Tones”. After serving in the US Army, primarily in France, he returned to the US where for a few years he worked as a security officer at the Metropolitan Museum of Arts in New York City. His love for his beloved Islands drew him back home to St Thomas, where he subsequently dedicated himself to the VI Police Department, furthering his education and earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice, followed by a Master of Divinity degree. Alvin also enjoyed membership in the International Academy of Criminology and several courses at Metropolitan Police Department Washington DC., Police Training Center of Sirchie Finger Print Laboratories New Jersey and Criminal Justice Institute Atlanta University.

Alvin’s career with the Police Department was primarily in Forensics, where he dedicated many years to enhancing and expanding the department’s capabilities. His contributions were so significant that several neighboring islands sought  assistance in solving more complex cases. Alvin also imparted his knowledge to every new recruit, teaching them courses in Forensic Science. These courses were designed to be both educational and engaging, incorporating elements such as surprise mock bank robberies, home burglaries, and murder scenarios. Despite his serious work in Forensic Science, Alvin continued to enjoy his passion for writing and recording music. One of his songs even made it to the top ten of Billboard Magazine. Alvin’s humor was infectious, and he brought levity to even the most serious situations.

Following his retirement from the Police Department, Alvin joined US Customs as an officer at the Virgin Islands Airport. However, due to family medical needs, he relocated to the US mainland. During this period, Alvin worked with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement in their Forensic Unit in Tallahassee, Florida. He then moved to South Florida, where he served with the Charlotte County Security Department for several productive years. Alvin spent five years at the Justice Complex in Punta Gorda and ten years at the Administration Building in Port Charlotte. He retired after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Despite his professional accomplishments, Alvin is most renowned for his role as a devoted husband and father. His wife, Gertrude, who he was married to for fifty-two years, was his greatest love. This love was not merely conveyed through words, but through his consistent acts of kindness and thoughtfulness. Alvin’s children, Keith, Anthony, and Antoinette, were raised in an environment of quiet love and respect. They cherished their father and would never have wished for anything more than his continued well-being.
