Mrs. Barbara Louise (Gurley) Griffing, 61, of Port Charlotte, Florida, made her transition on Monday, September 20, 2010, after a long fight with colon cancer.
She was born January 23, 1949 in St. Louis, Missouri to the late John and Marie Gurley. A loving and special wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Barb loved to travel and moved to Hawaii in 1972 and Alaska in 1978. She met and married her soul mate and best friend, Stephen Griffing III, in 1980 in Kodiak, Alaska. Her two loving children, Morgan and Stephen IV, were born there and now reside in Port Charlotte. Barb was a registered nurse for 36 years; the last 13 years she specialized in oncology. She was deeply committed to Florida Cancer Specialists and the Oncology Nursing Society. Barb loved her patients, doctors, and comrades. Barb drew inspiration and strength from her patients. She loved to quilt, sew, and golf, and was a member of the Peace River Quilters Guild. She received the most joy in spending time with her grandson, Steele Griffing.
Barbara was an inspiration to all who knew her, with her strength, support, and love. She mended broken bones, hearts, and spirits with her compassionate care and touched the lives of countless others in her life and community. Barb encouraged and shared herself willingly with many.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 30 years, Stephen F. Griffing III; a daughter, Morgan M. Griffing of Port Charlotte, and son, Stephen F. Griffing IV, of Lafayette, LA; one grandson, Steele P. Griffing of Port Charlotte; a sister, Mary K. Gurley, and brother, John W. and wife Cyndie Gurley, Jr. both of Port Charlotte; and her four legged friend, Miles. She will also be missed by numerous cousins, extended family, and countless friends throughout the country.
PS. Barb would like to remind everyone to get your colonoscopy at 50!!!
