Barbara was born on February 18, 1944 in Arcadia, Florida to the late Nellie (nee-Holton) and James T. Read. Barbara, who overcame at an early age the many challenges from congenital deafness, was an active, loving mother, grandmother and wife, who will be missed by her family and friends who knew and loved her dearly.
She is survived by her loving husband of 28 years, Lewis Wayne Kennedy of Rotonda West, FL; a son, Philip Dignan, Jr. of Sterling, VA; a daughter, Nelda Knapik of Jacksonville, FL; granddaughter, Tori Knapik; sisters, Nell Owens, Joyce Crownover, and Peggy Cole; a brother, Tommy Read, and many extended family members.
A Memorial Gathering and service will be held beginning at 4 P.M. Saturday, September 20, 2014 at the Gilchrist Park Gazebo in Punta Gorda. Private burial will be held later at Indian Spring Cemetery, Punta Gorda.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Barbara’s name are suggested to Tidewell Hospice.

My deep condolences for the loss of your dear Barbara. I remember her fondly when we were growing up together at F.S.D. She was a brunette beauty with a beautiful smile. She was my classmate for several years when we were kids.
For the last several years before our graduation, we used to stand next to each other in the line waiting before going to class & dinning room every morning, noon and evening. There while waiting, she had told me many interesting stories. May she rest in peace.
