Catherine M. Stewart, 57, of Port Charlotte, Florida died Saturday, February 12, 2022, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was born October 12, 1964, in Boston, Massachusetts, and lived in Glasgow, Scotland until age 21, when she returned to the United States. Catherine was a very proud mother of her two beautiful children Cameron and McKenzie. She loved her family more than anything in the world. Catherine’s love impacted the lives of countless people whom she called friends.

Catherine joined the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office and served the citizens of Charlotte County as a law enforcement officer for 30 years before retiring in 2018. During her career, Catherine worked in various positions including road patrol, internal affairs, juvenile crimes, Criminal Investigations, and school resources. She was awarded Deputy of the Year in 1999 and Deputy of the Quarter in 1989, 1997, and 1999. Catherine also received the community involvement award, distinguished service award along with many commendations and countless letters from the community thanking her for her service. During her career, Catherine was proud to lead the team of school resource officers working within the Charlotte County Public Schools. Under her guidance Catherine led her SRO team to gain FASRO state recognition in 2012 and NASRO national recognition in 2013; however, one of Catherine’s most notable contributions during her time with the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office was working a landmark cold case murder investigation. Due to her ability to develop a rapport with the main suspect, she was instrumental in solving and making arrests in the case. Catherine earned a Bachelor’s degree from St. Leo University and a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice from American Public University. Shortly after she retired from the Sheriff’s Office, Catherine joined the Punta Gorda Police Department and continued to serve the citizens of Charlotte County until her diagnosis.

Catherine is survived by her loving family, a daughter, McKenzie Stewart; son, Cameron Stewart both of Port Charlotte; mother, Theresa (Tess) Jack Stewart of Scotland; 2 brothers, Joseph Stewart of Ohio and Thomas Stewart of Scotland; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Catherine was preceded in death by her sister Tracey (Gerry) Bell.

A Memorial Mass celebrating her life will be held Friday, February 18, 2022, at 1:00 PM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 211 W. Charlotte Ave., Punta Gorda, FL.

I will always be grateful for Catherine Stewart's commitment to Charlotte County. Although Cathy was a law enforcement officer in her career, she was also a great asset to Charlotte County Schools. I am sorry not to be there but am just dealing with cancer myself and was unable to be vaccinated and was told not be with lots of people which I am sure there will be because you are and will be one of the most beautiful people I have ever met. Catherine used her position as a school resource officer as it was truly intended…to impact youngsters lives in a positive way. She had a unique blend of toughness and compassion blended into her work which allowed her to change the course of countless young people. Catherine will live on through all those lives that were touched by her kind hand and warm heart.. Thank you Stewart family for sharing Catherine with us. We remember Catherine as being a vibrant, intelligent, loving and feisty woman! We had just seen her at thanksgiving dinner last November and she lit up the room with her wit and warmth. Anytime we saw her she was always upbeat and talking about her family and friends. She seemed so full of energy you would have never guessed that she was fighting the battle of her life. She didn’t dwell on negatives, always positive. When we heard that Catherine had passed we immediately felt a huge emptiness that was undeniably heartbreaking. She reached so many lives, it would be impossible to not have a sense of loss that spread far and wide. Our Deepest Sympathies to her children, her family, friends, and co-workers.

She was truly a blessing to this world and will be greatly missed. I am beyond grateful that I was able to know her beautiful soul.

We miss her already . What a bright light that passed quickly through our world and we are all better for it.

I only met Catherine a handful of times, but they were all memorable. She was a vibrant, effervescent, inquisitive, hysterical force of nature. Her light can never be dimmed.
