Donald Maurice Proffer, 90, of Port Charlotte, Florida died on Thursday, April 16, 2020.
Donald or “Don” to family and friends, was born March 24, 1930 in Flint, Michigan to the late Carl and Evelyn (Dixon) Proffer. Don served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War and retired as Quality Control Head for General Motors’ Cadillac Division in Michigan. His grandchildren will tell you, Papa was great at listening. He made sure you felt special, that you were important; and he was so smart and wise, you believed him. He made sure to give all of his loved ones, a unique bond, something shared just between the two of them.
He was a renaissance man. He evolved through a wealth of lived experiences, learning from both the good and bad. He had a passion for wood working, he was a scholar, an engineer, a golfer, a soldier, a manager, an artist, an inventor, a comedian, a historian, an eloquent writer, a computer tech, a gardener, and a loyal and loving Husband and family man.
His loving relationship with his wife is one for the storybooks. It started when they were teenagers and he asked her to a movie. It survived the distance of being stationed apart during his service, living in poverty in New York with a small child, losing a child before it’s birth, losing and getting jobs, and the challenges of fibromyalgia, depression and Alzheimer’s. He never stopped loving and growing with Jeanne.
He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 68 years, Jeanne Proffer; a daughter, Gloria Healy; three grandchildren, granddaughter Sara Healy Knee, grandsons Jesse Healy and Nick Healy and Sara’s children, great granddaughters Sylvia and Rosabel, as well as nephews Andrew Proffer, Christopher Proffer and Ian Proffer, niece Arabella Proffer Szporluk, and cousin Lester Proffer. Don was preceded in death by his only sibling (brother), Carl Ray Proffer who passed prior to their parents passing.
In compliance with suggested guidelines to help prevent the further spread of Covid-19 and protect our most vulnerable and at-risk individuals, a service celebrating Don’s life will be scheduled and announced at a later date when public gatherings are again permitted. Please return to this remembrance page for updated service information. Thank you, the Proffer family.
