Dr. Lena Alhama DeLisser Matthews, born in Jamaica, January 8th, 1925, passed away in Punta Gorda, Florida on December 8th, 2022 at the age of 97 after a brief illness.
Lena has left a trail of outstanding accomplishments, including BSc Degree from Fordham University (1957), MSc (1959) & PhD (1968) Degrees from Columbia University, and tenured Professor of Pharmacology, with many distinguished awards and recognition by her peers. Lena retired in 1992 from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy & Sciences being the 1st black woman to be on faculty in the University. A life well lived, loved by all and will be greatly missed!
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Edmund Matthews, Brother Leonard DeLisser, Sisters Lilly-White St. Juste, May Campbell, and Myrtle James, nieces Sybil Goffe and Colleen Abrahams. She leaves behind her dear nieces Dianne Phillips, Susan Tavares, Judith DeLisser, adoring grandnieces Tanyah Lockett and Tracy-Ann Smith, several great grandnieces and nephews, Richard DeLisser, Michael Abrahams, Dale Abrahams and grand nephews Kurt Goffe and Kevin Lockett (In-Law) (& several great grandnephews).
