I had been looking for Ed for a couple of months, when I came across and article on his war service in Don Moore's War tales. I met Ed after I was hired by Western Electric back in 1970. I was transferred to the New Rochelle Telephone Office to assist Ed in putting in a new operator switchboard. Ed took this young Marine veteran under his wing and taught me the ropes. This was at a time when so called 'Old Timers' jealously guarded the tricks of the trade for fear of being replaced. Ed was just a different guy... and funny! He would have me in stitches all day long and it made the day pass much faster. He told me stories about his father, who Ed told me was in his 70s when he was born, and lived to see him grow up and enter the service. He was a wonderful man, and a great friend for a young man just starting out to discover. I was looking for him because I wanted to tell him that I survived the layoff in '75, and came back to the phone company in '78 to finish out my career. I owe a lot of what I learned early to Ed. I am retired now, and not well, but I will never forget Ed Bremen. Semper FI, Ed John Zaffino Carmel, New York
James Markle left a message on April 17, 2012:
I did not know Edward, but my uncle was also in Co F, 2nd Battalion, 24th Marines (Sgt Harold Markle) and served in Namur, Saipan, and Iwo Jima. Its very likley that they knew of each other, and would have shared some tense times together that only those that were there would know. I'm always sad to see this group of men get small as time marches on. My uncle passed in 1994. Please accept my condolences and always remember. James Markle
