Mama G, to family and friends, was born April 19, 1924, in Jamaica West Indies, to the late Oscar and Frances (nee-Gregory) Bennett. In 1969, she and her family immigrated to the U.S., leaving her native Jamaica for Long Island, New York. With her husband Charlton Green, she raised five children while working for the State University of New York’s Stony Brook center campus. After her retirement from the University, she moved in 1990 to Port Charlotte, where she enjoyed going to church faithfully, and relaxing at the seniors center enjoying playing a game of Dominos with others.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Charlton Sr., daughter Carmen Pitterson, and son Gladston Green. She is survived by daughter, Barbara Nungent; sons, Winston Elliott, and Charlton Green, Jr.; brother, Thomas Bennett; 26 grandchildren, and numerous great grand and great-great grandchildren, extended family members and friends.
Visitation and funeral service will be held Thursday, July 13, 2017, at Roberson Funeral Home, 2151 Tamiami Trail, in Port Charlotte. Viewing will begin at 10 a.m., funeral service at 11 a.m., and committal ceremony and Entombment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Port Charlotte. Pastor Clyde Swalls of Christ’s Community Church in Punta Gorda, will officiate.
