Gary B. McNamara, 77, of Port Charlotte Florida died peacefully at home on Thursday, October 5th, 2023.
Gary was born in Miami, Florida, in 1946 to the late James and Irene Patterson. Gary attended Miami Jackson High School. He joined the Navy before his 18th birthday with permission from his mother. Gary travelled the world before returning home to Miami. Upon return, Gary began courting his future wife, Pat. They first met as teenagers growing up in the same neighborhood. They married in 1968. In early 1970’s Pat and Gary moved from Miami to Port Charlotte, where they raised their family. Gary and Pat’s marriage spanned decades until Pat’s death in 2022.
Gary worked in both pest control and as a meat cutter throughout his life. He enjoyed spending time with his wife, Children, and extended family. That meant lots of celebrations, cookouts and holiday get togethers. He coached his kids in flag football and softball when they were young. Gary was also involved in the Knights of Columbus and Special Olympics with both his son and grandson. His love for his children could only be matched by the pride he had for his grandchildren. He was a dedicated Papa to his 13 grandkids, making countless memories with them. Gary was an avid sports fan and could always be counted on to support any of his Miami teams, be it the Dolphins, Hurricanes, Heat or Marlins! Gary enjoyed fishing and target shooting with his brother Don and son Mark. In recent years Gary attended Port Charlotte United Methodist Church.
Family was the most important thing to Gary. He loved all his kids and grandkids unconditionally. He had an easy manner and never held a grudge. He was kind, plain and simple. He never asked for much but was always generous in big and small ways to everyone else. The last year since his wife Pat passed away was difficult but he worked hard to carry on traditions and keep connections with loved ones. While we mourn his loss, the family finds consolation in the knowledge that Gary and Pat are reunited.
Gary is survived by his loving family: Sons Mark Albert of Port Charlotte, FL, and Allen McNamara (Amy) of North Port; Daughters, Nichole Dunn (Justin) of Punta Gorda, FL, Norene McNamara of Jacksonville, FL, and Teresa Davis (Sheldon) of Port Charlotte, FL; Brother Donald Miller (Sherry) of Punta Gorda, FL; Sisters Linda Morrell (Warren) of Perry, FL and Tonnie Broom (Chris) of Punta Gorda, FL; Sister in law Louise “Mickey” McDonough of Port Charlotte, FL; Brothers in law Barry McDonough and Keith McDonough both of Port Charlotte, FL; Thirteen grandchildren, Angelo, Kordell, Tyler, Carson, Cayden, Adrianna, Xavier, Lincoln, Stella, Sylas, Addison, Elijah and Jagger. He also leaves behind countless cousins and nieces and nephews. Gary was preceded in death by his sister, Christine Boyett, and brother James Patterson.
A celebration of Gary’s life will be held by his family at Bissett Park in Punta Gorda on November 5th from 1 to 5 pm. Gary will be interred at Sarasota National Cemetery on Monday, November 6th at 11 a.m. Guests are asked to arrive 30 minutes early. Family and friends are welcome to attend both services.
