Joey Michael Alonso, age 57 of Punta Gorda FL died on December 5th, 2025, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. He was born to Jack and Joan (Joecks) Alonso on August 4th, 1968, in Menomonee Falls, WI. After entering middle school, he and his family moved up to Manitowish Waters, WI where Joey graduated from Lakeland High School in 1986. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the United States Navy, embarking on a remarkable 22-year career that saw him rise to the rank of Chief Petty Officer.
Joey was a true “Chief’s” Chief. He cared deeply about his fellow sailors, especially taking pride in mentoring those junior to him. His dedication to his fellow service members and his country was unwavering and his contributions left an indelible mark on all who served alongside him. The Navy gave Joey the opportunity to “see the world” and develop many lifelong friendships. After retiring from the Navy at Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Joey settled with his family up in Northern Virginia where he enjoyed a successful career as an Intelligence Analyst, working as both a contractor and owning a consulting firm.
Joey met his future wife, Kathleen Tierney, while stationed in San Diego in 1997, marrying in 1999. They were a clear perfect match that were blessed to experience many adventures by each other’s side. Together, Joey and Kathie raised two beautiful children, Matthew and Molly, that were truly his greatest source of pride. He watched them become the remarkable people they are today and took every opportunity to be part of their lives through volunteering and coaching their many activities.
Joey had a big personality and loved to lead. He spent countless hours volunteering with the US Navy Sea Cadets, a Navy youth organization. He joined the program when his son Matthew was a cadet and continued many years afterwards as Commanding Officer of both the Annapolis Division (Maryland) and Gulf Eagle Division (Florida). He loved working with the cadets and watching them develop. Many went on to attend the various military service academies.
Joey loved to be a part of the community everywhere he lived. He was an active member of various organizations and most recently a member of the Rotary Club of Punta Gorda and the American Legion Post 103. He strived to make the world around him a better place to be and believed in the importance of being involved.
He was preceded in death by his beloved sister, Jaennine (Alonso) Byczek and brother-in-law Jerry Wagner.
In addition to Kathie, Matthew and Molly, Joey is survived by his brother Jack (Michelle) Alonso, his nieces Shannon (Scott) Baumann, Adena (Eric) Hinz, Nicole Alonso and Emma (Ryan) Barr along with many other cherished family members and countless friends.
