Joseph Augustus Douglas, 88, of Port Charlotte, Florida, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 14, 2022, at the Tidewell Hospice House in Port Charlotte, Florida.
Born in Grenada in the Caribbean, on a Monday, January 8, 1934, to the late George Edwards and Mary Douglas, Joe had migrated to Trinidad in his early years before immigrating to Connecticut in the US at the age of 19, where he was employed by Springfield Sugar, also known as Sweet Life, for 29 years until his retirement in 1997. Joe following his retirement in 1997, with his wife of many years Una R. Douglas, became full time residents of Port Charlotte, leaving their longtime home in Hartford, Connecticut for sunny Southwest, Florida. Joe and Una are members of Christ’s Community Church in Punta Gorda, Florida.
In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by a son, John Douglas, and a daughter, Nellie Clark. He is survived by his wife Una of Port Charlotte, FL; son Orvil L. Wright; sisters Frances Wright, and Glenda Wright; eleven grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 AM, with funeral service from 11 AM to 12 noon, at Roberson Funeral Home located at 2151 Tamiami Trail in Port Charlotte, and committal and entombment to follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens cemetery also in Port Charlotte, on Thursday, August 25, 2022.
In lieu of flowers, the Douglas family requests donations in Augustus name to Tidewell Hospice care of the Tidewell Foundation Inc. at 5955 Rand Blvd, Sarasota, Florida 34238-5160.
