Joseph G. Michalkiewicz, Chief Warrant Officer 3 US Army Retired, of Punta Gorda, FL passed away Sunday January 22, 2023 at Fawcett Hospital at the age of 75.
Joseph was a decorated helicopter pilot who served two tours of duty during the Vietnam war, receiving the Purple Heart, 57 air medals, and many other Army decorations. He continued as an Army pilot before eventually transitioning into the position of Safety Officer, and upon retirement from active duty continued to serve in that role as a civilian employee working for the Army, reaching the rank of GS-13.
Joseph was an avid musician and golfer who received two Bachelor’s Degrees, one in Air Safety and one in Computer Science.
He is survived by his loving wife Sandy Sapatka; three children, Joelle Augustine of Troy, NY, Eric Michalkiewicz of Albany, NY, and Scott Michalkiewicz of Saratoga, NY. He is also survived by his brother Kevin Michalkiewicz, sister Eileen Whiting, grandchildren Steven Augustine and Sarah Augustine, and his nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Alexander and Kathleen Michalkiewicz, and his sister, Kathleen Fahey. Joe is also survived by many friends all over the US and Germany.
A memorial service with full military honors by the U.S. Army, will be held Friday, 1 pm, March 3rd, 2023, at Friendship United Methodist Church, located at 12275 Paramount Drive in Punta Gorda, Florida.
