Leslie Arden Harris,63, of Port Charlotte, Florida passed away at her home on Sunday, October 13, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.
Leslie was born on March 1, 1961, in Atlanta, Georgia to Arden and William Hubbard, Jr.
Leslie spent her formative years in Colts Neck, New Jersey, graduating from Marlboro High School. She then attended Baylor University in Waco, Texas earning a bachelor’s degree in education and her master’s in special education. Leslie taught fourth grade in Waco, Texas for 16 years and then taught special education.
Leslie moved to Florida in 1998 and was hired on July 6th as a Varying Exceptionalities teacher at Sally Jones Elementary School in the Charlotte County School District. With her experience and notable caring for student success Leslie then moved to the district office and took the position of Program Staffing Specialist for Charlotte County Schools. She maintained a special emphasis on Pre-K and elementary students and in particular, students with autism. A memorial fund has been established to help these children. Given her experience and success with student achievement, Leslie was sought after to serve on statewide groups advising the Florida Department of Education. Leslie was a member of the Charlotte Education Association and served on the Bargaining Committee helping teachers with their teaching contracts. She Retired from the Charlotte County School system in December 2021.
Leslie was a member of Xi Theta Chapter of Sigma Phi Gamma International Sorority serving the community. Leslie’s first passion was singing in the church choir. She enjoyed people and was recognized as a leader in her community. She loved refereeing volleyball, shooting pool at the clubhouse, singing karaoke and throwing cornhole. Leslie was usually the first person to welcome new residents to the King’s Gate Community. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, “Meme”.
Leslie is survived by her mother, Arden Hubbard of Port Charlotte, Florida, her father William M. Hubbard Jr. of Houston, Texas, brother William M. Hubbard III(Tatyana Kostyanovskaya) of Houston Texas; sister, Janice Hubbard-Brenner of Boca Raton, Florida; son, Clayton(Charisse) Harris of Gilmer, Texas; daughter Heather Harris(Dustin Whidden) of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and five grandchildren; Bryley, Haidyn, Tyler, Camden, River and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life service will be held at the Port Charlotte Global Methodist Church, 21075 Quesada Avenue, Port Charlotte, FL 33952 on November 16th, 2024, at 2:00PM. In Lieu of flowers the family is requesting memorial contributions be made to: Charlotte County Public Schools-Memo: ESE dept-Leslie Harris Memorial Fund.
