Rev. Mary E. Brown, 95, of Port Charlotte, Florida passed away Monday, August 24, 2026 at her home in Port Charlotte.

 Mary was born on December 24, 1930 in Jamaica. She was the third child of Rev. D.U. Brown and Matilda Brown. For five years, they were childless but continued to believe in The Lord for children. Several members of their church meet daily, Monday through Friday, for prayer. On one such occasion, one of the ladies prophesied to D.U. and Mother Brown that the Lord was going to give them a child. “If it is a boy, name him Simeon; if a girl, name her Sarah.” Mother Brown, as she was fondly called, conceived as prophesied, and Sarah was born. Next was Symeon, then came Mary, then Dotty, and finally, Hilda, who is the only surviving sibling.

Mary became the full-time pastor of the Porus Church, which continues to this day. Mary later became the inaugural pastor of the Open Bible Church in Osborne Store, Clarendon, where she pastored for several years. Mary had a passion for youth, and everyone gravitated to her.

In the 1960’s Mary visited the United States several times, living in New York for several years. She permanently relocated there in the early 1970’s. Later, she was joined by her sister Sally, her husband Harry and family. Later, they all moved to Connecticut. In the U.S., Mary worked as a housekeeper, companion, and later a nursing assistant and supervisor. She was blessed with a heart for service and over the years had a passion for taking care of the elderly. Mother Brown and her sister, Dotty, joined Mary after she settled with Hilda and family in Port Charlotte, FL where she built her second home. It was there that she took care of her mom until her passing in 1896 and her sister Dotty, who passed in 2007.

As Mary aged, it became apparent that she was no longer safe to live alone. Her sister Hilda and family stepped in to provide personal care and support her until the day she passed on. Mary was extremely kind, loving, and never had a harsh word for anyone. She exemplified the heart of Christ until her last breath. She will be fondly remembered and dearly missed.

A visitation will be held 10:00AM-11:00AM, with a funeral service to follow at 11:00AM, Wednesday, September 9, 2026 at Community Life Center in Port Charlotte. Interment will follow to Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Port Charlotte, FL.
