Mary Jean Long, 78, of Port Charlotte, Florida passed away Saturday, July 26, 2008 at Peace River Regional Medical Center in Port Charlotte.

She was born October 21, 1929 in Ashland, Kentucky and moved to Port Charlotte twenty years ago from Ashland. She was a retired Receptionist for a doctor’s Office and volunteered for C.A.R.E. of Charlotte County. She was a long time member of First Christian Church of Ashland.

Survived by a sister, Betty Jo Castle of Ashland, KY; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, James C. Long.

I had the pleasure of working with Jeanie at CARE. She was an incredible advocate and a good friend. My thoughts and prayers are with her family. You were all truly blessed to have her.

Jeanie will be forever in our hearts and in our day to day service at C.A.R.E. She was given C.A.R.E.'s highest Step Forward recognition because of her tireless dedication to helping victims of abuse, especially the children. She dearly loved her nieces and nephews and was greatly loved by children in shelter. She was a role model and educator to the staff. Many of us have pledged to follow her shining example.
