Michelle Herston, 55, of Port Charlotte, Florida died Sunday, May 30, 2010 at home surrounded by her loving family.
Michelle was born on June 22, 1954 in Akron, Ohio. She attended Turkeyfoot Elementary School, Erwine Junior High School, and Coventry High School, all located in Akron. On November 3rd, 1967, at the age of 13, she met her husband, James W. Jim Herston, local engineer and Charlotte County Airport Authority Commissioner. They were married 6 years later and have been together and inseparable ever since. Their last anniversary marked the 36-year milestone. Jim, Michelle, and their 2 children, Dr. Melody L. Herston and Matthew J. Herston, moved to Port Charlotte in August of 1985, seeking the warm weather, small town atmosphere, and the beautiful harbor views. Michelle was an executive secretary for most of her career, eventually working beside Jim at Herston Engineering Services, Inc. Michelle retired to her new dream home in 2002. She was a member of Murdock Baptist Church and the Charlotte Bay Chapter of the D.A.R.
Michelle put her heart and soul into caring for her family. With a true servant’s heart she welcomed family and friends into her home on numerous occasions where she would bless them with her generous hospitality. Her bubbly personality and infectious laugh warmed the hearts of many.
Michelle is survived by her husband James W. Herston, daughter Dr. Melody Herston, son, Matthew J. Herston, and her father, Harry L. Gray, all of Port Charlotte; sister Grace (Dennis) Shanafelt and nephew Dean Shanafelt, both of Jefferson, Georgia; niece Heidi (Rudy) Tingelhoff, great-niece Grace Tingelhoff, and great-nephew Oliver Tingelhoff, all of Charleston, South Carolina; uncle Richard (Janice) Gray of Akron, Ohio; and her beloved dog Onyx. She was preceded in death by her mother Sally Jeanette Gray in 2008 and her great-nephew O. Denny Tingelhoff in 2006.
Visitation will be held Thursday, June 3, 2010 at 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM at Roberson Funeral Home Port Charlotte Chapel. Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, June 4, 2010 at Murdock Baptist Church, Cochran Blvd, Port Charlotte. Rev. Mark D. Smith will officiate. Entombment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Forest Nelson Blvd, Port Charlotte.
