Nancy was born on March 5, 1930, in Mercer County, PA to Albert and Ella (Hartman) Fyffe, one of three children. She grew up in farm country and always cherished memories of that simpler time and life. She lived in Pennsylvania and Texas before moving to Florida. She was a long-term resident of South Port Square, sharing in the near year-long evacuation to Tampa following Hurricane Charley.
When Nancy married Jim Sands, she showed she loved not just her new husband but his whole family. She was “Grandma Nan” that the family loved in return. As one of her granddaughters said at Jim’s funeral, “I am thankful that he had someone as special as Grandma Nan in his life. She is an amazing, caring, and feisty woman (perfect for Grandpa). She will be loved and cherished by my family forever.”
During her time at South Port, Nancy painted landscapes and family portraits that are treasured by her family. She was president of the Republican Women’s Club and active in the Red Hat Society. She represented her floor on the South Port Resident’s Council, running bingo games and working to ensure new residents felt welcome. She celebrated every holiday season with flair and her Christmas tree was up year-round.
We will remember her red hair, her adventurous and feisty sprit, and her love of family, her country and all things Republican.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ella and Albert Ashton Fyffe, brother Lamont Fyffe and husband of 24 years, James D. Sands. She is survived by her brother Duane Fyffe who resides in Mercer County Pa., her children Karen (John) Stahlman, James (Kim Womack) Haigler and Richard Haigler, members of her extended family and many beloved grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held later. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given in her memory to the Republican National Party.
