Orinda W. Kennedy, 93, of Port Charlotte, FL, died Sunday, January 11, 2015, at Signature Health Care of Port Charlotte.
Born July 11, 1921, in Evington, Virginia, she was the fourth daughter and eighth child of Leonidas A. and Lula May Wood. The family moved to Sweetwater, Tennessee, in 1923.
A graduate of Sweetwater High and the University of Tennessee, Mrs. Kennedy did additional studies at the University of Alabama, Birmingham. She worked in bacteriology at Baylor University Medical facility and in medical technology departments of hospitals in Orlando, Chattanooga, Atlanta, and Knoxville. In her senior years, she worked at Wood Presbyterian Home as Activities Director until her retirement at the age of 78.
In 2006, Mrs. Kennedy moved from Sweetwater, Tennessee, to Port Charlotte, Florida. She was a member of Port Charlotte First Presbyterian Church and a former long time member of Sweetwater First Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by her loving family: daughter and son-in-law Doris and Terry Hixson of Port Charlotte; granddaughter Rindi and husband Lyman Welton of Port Charlotte; granddaughter Elaine Hixson and finance Mark Weiss of Tucson, Arizona; granddaughter Liana and husband LTC. Stacey Corn of Fort Knox, Kentucky; great-grandchildren Savannah Welton, Megan Corn and Trevor Corn. Also surviving are numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.
Preceding her in death were her parents; eight siblings including R.E. Wood, A.W. Wood, B.C. Wood, Beauregard Wood, Lula May Wood, Grace Armstrong, Lois Loomis, Arrants R. Wood; and her daughter Carole Kennedy.
Memorial services will be held in Sweetwater, Tennessee.
