Pouplard Brutus Sr. was born in Jacmel Haiti on November 25, 1941. He was the second-born and only boy born to Lamartiniere and Lizamene (née-Jean) Brutus followed by his sisters, Claudette and Rosette. After finishing his education in Haiti, Pouplard traveled to the United States where he continued his education. He settled in New Jersey with his wife Rita where they started a family, including his children, Patricia and Pouplard Jr. After the tragic loss of their daughter, he relocated to Florida with his family where he resided until the time of his passing on May 2, 2023.
Pouplard earned a living as a microbiologist, an occupation he was very proud of as he had a strong passion for chemistry and science in general. Once settled in Port Charlotte, Pouplard became an active and valuable member of the parish at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church where he served as a eucharistic minister, a lector, a member of the Certified Knights of Columbus and a volunteer of the Parish Pastoral Council. He was also an active coordinator for the Haitian community at St. Charles where he assisted in the organization of scripture readings in French and Creole during masses.
Despite moving a distance from his sisters, Pouplard visited New Jersey whenever possible to attend family events, weddings, funerals, graduations, etc. He was a family man who enjoyed the company of his nieces and nephews and later their children each time he came back to New Jersey. He maintained his connection with his many friends and relatives by calling each one periodically, even if only for a minute or two to wish them a happy birthday, make them laugh or for no reason at all.
Pouplard was known as the comedian of the family, never missing the opportunity to crack a joke or tell a funny story. He shared his heart with his loved ones through humor and was never stingy with his hugs and kisses. He took pride in his appearance and often reminded others of how good he looked when he walked in a room. Pouplard loved to dance, especially to Haitian music and would never pass on a good home-cooked meal. Pouplard lived a life of humility, full of faith, prayer and love and developed a family with the Haitian community at St. Charles who embraced him until the very end.
Pouplard was preceded in death by his older sister, Gertha, his daughter, Patricia, and his wife Rita. He is survived by his son, Pouplard Jr., his sisters, Claudette Lamothe and Rosette Despinos, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors and friends. He will be missed but his wonderful spirit will live on in all of those who loved him.
The Brutus Family would like to acknowledge and thank the Lamothe Family, Despinos Family, Duplan Family, Begon Family, Jean Family, Rodriguez Family, Preux Family and the St. Charles parish community for all the love and support the family has received during this difficult time.
Visitation and services were held on Thursday, May 11, 2023, and Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, May 12, 2023. Pouplard will be laid to rest at a later date with his wife Rita.
