Richard James Brown, 98, of Punta Gorda, Florida died Wednesday, September 07, 2016 at Bayfront Health-Punta Gorda.
Richard was born Dec 8, 1917 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Albert E and Katherine Phant Brown and moved to Punta Gorda in 1994 from Valley Stream, L.I., New York. He was a retired maritime commerce bookkeeper and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War. Richard was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Punta Gorda, American Legion Post #110 of Port Charlotte and the 4th Marine Division Association. He also volunteered for many years ago Bon-Secours St. Joseph Hospital in Port Charlotte which is now Bayfront Health-Port Charlotte.
He is survived by his loving family, three sons, Richard J. (Beatrice) Brown, Jr. of Port Charlotte, Roger J. (Sharon) Brown of Rockingham, NC and Rodney J. (Thomas O’Rourke) Brown of Kew Gardens, NY; 6 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine Brown who died in 1998.
Visitation will be held Monday, Sept. 12, 2016 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Roberson Funeral Home Punta Gorda Chapel, 215 Mary St., Punta Gorda, FL 33950. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday 11:00 AM, Sept. 13, 2016 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 211 E. Charlotte Ave., Punta Gorda, FL 33950. Interment with military honors by a U.S. Navy Honor Guard will follow at 2:00 PM Tuesday at Sarasota National Cemetery, Sarasota, FL.
